Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Markina
Hi Tatiana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
A person can search for their life’s passion for a long time. Some may discover it in childhood, while others might find it much later. I consider myself fortunate, as I became a photographer in my teenage years.
A long time ago, I was born in Eastern Europe. By chance, I found myself in the company of older friends, and we shared a deep passion for motorcycles. We rode for hours on end, basking in sunrises and bidding farewell to sunsets. One day, an idea struck me: what if I captured all of this on film?
I didn’t own a camera at the time, so I borrowed one from a friend. I created a short film about our motorcycle gang, and to my surprise, it turned out so well that everyone in my city came to know me as a photographer and videographer.
Since then, my passion for photography blossomed. I had no books or formal training on the subject, and I still wonder how I managed to take photos without knowing the basics. Late into the nights, I immersed myself in old issues of Vogue and conducted numerous creative shoots.
Eventually, I saved enough money to buy my first camera, a modest Canon EOS 600D. That’s when I officially embraced my identity as a photographer.
I was soon invited to work in China, where I honed my skills over four years, shooting for clothing stores, restaurants, and modeling agencies. I also spent two years photographing in Europe, and ultimately, I was fortunate enough to move to America.
For the past two years, I have been living and working in Texas, where my journey as a photographer continues to unfold.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
At the very beginning of my career, when I realized my passion for photography, I was studying at university to become an accountant. It soon became clear to me that I couldn’t balance my studies with my newfound love for photography. I understood that a choice needed to be made.
At that moment, it was terrifying to choose photography and step into the unknown. Yet the thought of remaining in university and working at a job I didn’t enjoy was equally frightening.
Unfortunately, my family didn’t support my aspirations; everyone discouraged me and no one believed that I could succeed. I found myself having to go against the tide and listen to my own heart. Ultimately, I chose photography.
Do I regret it? Absolutely not! Was it difficult to embark on this journey without the support of loved ones? Undoubtedly.
But photography is the best thing that has ever happened to me. It’s not merely a job; it’s a way of life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work as a fashion photographer, and my role revolves around creating images that showcase clothing, accessories, and lifestyle. My primary focus is on editorial shoots for fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, lookbook photography, as well as casting and test shoots. I also handle all the editing and post-processing of my images myself.
My work sits at the intersection of beauty and fashion, characterized by a bold use of color, unique angles, and expressive poses. This approach allows each talent to shine and provides a platform for them to express themselves without any boundaries. I believe this sets me apart from other photographers.
In 2018, I was honored to win the International Sanya Photography Contest & Exhibition in China, which featured participants from 28 countries. This achievement is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career.
I hope to surprise you with new successes in the future.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe that before seeking a mentor, it’s essential to look within yourself and ask: Who am I, and what do I truly want? What am I willing to sacrifice for my dreams or goals?
I think the most effective way to establish connections is by being authentic when meeting new people. This world has plenty of superficiality and hypocrisy. If you are a kind, positive person who is passionate about your work, others will sense that energy from afar. This authenticity will undoubtedly guide you toward success.
