Today we’d like to introduce you to Terron Joseph.
Hi Terron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I am originally from New Orleans, La. I attended college for a few years and realized I had zero interest (after changing my major 3 times) in anything they had to offer. I decided to go to cosmetology school because I always loved doing hair I wanted to be able to provide the same excitement and confidence to others that I felt as a little girl leaving the hair salon. After finishing cosmetology school, I worked three jobs (hair stylist, manager at Edible Arrangements, and after-school counselor for YMCA) trying to make sure I could afford my bills until I built up my clientele. I realized if I didn’t give my hair my all, I would never make any progress or grow, so I started working at an actual salon for a few years before I moved to the DFW area. When I moved out here, I got a salon recommendation from someone saying that salon being would be very similar to my old salon and I would love it. So I started working in the Highland Village/ Flower Mound area , and while it was a nice salon and matched the same vibes aesthetically of my old salon, the salon culture was not for me. After working there for two years I decided to take a leap of faith and venture out into becoming a salon suite owner sharing a suite with a friend. In July of 2020, I moved into my own suite for more space, privacy, and to truly be able to create a space that reflected me, my values, and my work. I was also looking to provide a safe space for women of all races to get their hair done in an area where there aren’t many stylists who cater to all. In June of 2022, I moved suites to a location in Southlake.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am the type of person who doesn’t like to start things and not finish them. sSo, when I dropped out of college and went to cosmetology school I thought that maybe after this I’ll go back to college and finish just be able to prove to myself I can do whatever I put my mind to. I had an internal battle with myself about if hair was really what I wanted to do, but decided that going back to college wasn’t going to do anything but put me in more debt. Also a piece of that struggle was wanting to please my family by finishing college. Ultimately I had to make the tough decision to think about myself and my future and realized I only saw myself doing hair.
Moving into the suites in September of 2019, and then the Covid-19 pandemic hitting in early 2020 created a big struggle that I had not anticipated. I was still realtively new to the area, so I was still in the process of building my clientele. Thankfully through word of mouth and social media, I was still able to build my clientele base.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in blondes, lived-in color, and curly hair. I am most proud of my ability to talk with clients and help them set realistic hair goals they can afford and maintain. I think what sets me apart is being able to really form relationships with my clients and having that trust factor that I will deliver the results of what we discuss.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very shy and quiet when meeting new people, but once I was comfortable, I was very assertive. I loved reading as a child, but now hate it as an adult. I also loved to paint, and I was always outside riding my bike, roller skating, or riding my scooter. I was always a smidge insecure in elementary school because I was mixed with curly hair and pretty much everyone else was either black or white with naturally straight or relaxed hair. Once I got to high school and was on made the dance team, my confidence started to come through and I would embrace and love my curly hair.
