Rising Stars: Meet TJ Peden

Today we’d like to introduce you to TJ Peden.

TJ, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started leatherwork back in 2015 just as a hobby while I was in college. And it turned out to be more than a hobby. I’m now a full time firefighter in Amarillo Texas, so I get to run my leather shop on my days off. Works out pretty good. I started building custom hats about a year ago, again mainly just for myself and then had some people order them and now it’s part of the business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I really can’t complain about the road here. I have pretty great customers, most of which turn into return customers. They are patient with me as far as my lead time and creativity and its great.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make most leathergoods. I mainly specialize in wallets, belts, purses, etc. I hand draw every piece that comes out of my shop onto a piece of leather with a pencil. It makes every piece one of a kind and can’t be recreated. I started making custom hats about a year ago and it’s cohesive with the leatherwork but also very different. It was nice learning a new trade and trying something different.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I don’t really have another escape as far as technology or anything. But my wife and I sit on the porch and play with our kiddo most evenings and that keeps me pretty grounded.
