Rising Stars: Meet Tonia Velasquez of McKinney/Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonia Velasquez.

Hi Tonia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After the birth of my first child, and while pregnant with my second, I found myself searching for a different path. I was working full-time for a large corporation, often arriving home late and feeling as though I was missing precious moments in my daughter’s life. I wanted a career that would allow me to be present for my family while still contributing financially.

An unexpected opportunity soon appeared. A friend mentioned she was looking to sell her business working with children, and my husband encouraged me to explore the idea. At the time, I had no background in early childhood education and initially doubted whether I was the right fit. But my husband believed otherwise. He reminded me that my years of playing soccer, combined with my corporate experience, had prepared me with discipline, leadership, and resilience. Most importantly, he promised to support me every step of the way.

At 28 years old, and six months pregnant, I took a leap of faith and purchased my first Stretch-n-Grow franchise. From the very beginning, my husband played a vital role — helping teach classes and leading our marketing efforts. After maternity leave, I was ready to fully immerse myself in the business.

Teaching preschool fitness classes quickly became more than a job; it was something I genuinely loved. I even practiced lessons at home with my own children. Within 18 months, I had replaced my corporate salary. Not long after, I doubled it — all while working half days and spending invaluable time with my family.

Today, more than 20 years later, I own three franchises that serve over 1,000 preschool children each week. Perhaps the most rewarding part of this journey is seeing my own children now contribute to the business that once gave me the flexibility to raise them. It has truly come full circle.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the height of my Stretch-n-Grow franchise career, during what had been our best year yet, everything changed when the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to shut down. It was the most challenging period I have ever faced as a business owner. We worked tirelessly to stay focused, quickly pivoting to online fitness classes while doing everything we could to keep all 19 of our employees working. After months of uncertainty and struggle, with no clear end in sight, we ultimately had no choice but to close temporarily.

In the summer of 2020, a Department of Health announcement allowed us to return to schools, but the road to recovery was slow. Many schools were understandably cautious, and enrollments had declined significantly. Rebuilding took time, patience, and persistence. Even now, years later, we are still on the mend — but I’m grateful to say that things are finally looking up, and the future feels bright again.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own and operate three Stretch-n-Grow franchises, where we specialize in preschool fitness and enrichment programs designed to help young children build confidence, coordination, and a lifelong love of movement. Our classes focus on motor skill development, physical fitness, and imaginative, themed lesson plans that make exercise fun and engaging for children. Each week, our team has the privilege of teaching more than 1,000 preschoolers, partnering with schools to bring structured, high-energy programs directly into their classrooms.

Over the years, I’ve become known for my hands-on approach, my passion for working with young children, and my commitment to quality programming. I take great pride in creating a positive, encouraging environment where every child feels successful, regardless of their ability level. For many children, our classes are their first exposure to organized fitness, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch their confidence and skills grow.

What I’m most proud of is the impact our programs have on children, teachers, and families. We’re not simply teaching fitness; we’re helping children develop coordination, listening skills, social interaction, and self-esteem — all through movement and play. I also take great pride in building a strong team of coaches with our training and development program. I love that our employees take pride in making an impact in our Stretch-n-Grow stars and are truly dedicated to our mission!

What sets our business apart is the combination of structured curriculum, energy, and genuine connection. We emphasize creativity, positivity, and consistency, ensuring that every class is both educational and exciting. I also believe our personal relationships with schools and families make a significant difference. We work closely with directors and teachers to understand their needs and deliver programs that truly complement their educational environment.

Above all, I’m proud to have built a business that not only serves the community but has also become a family endeavor. Seeing my own children now involved in the company that once allowed me to spend more time with them is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For me, building a network with other Stretch-n-Grow owners has helped me grow and build immense confidence in the business. I’ve also found groups like the Franchise Women’s Network, Dallas chapter, to be of great value to me.
