Rising Stars: Meet Valeria Gonçalves of Downtown Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valeria Gonçalves

Hi Valeria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a family of musicians, architects, artists, and teachers, where creativity was ever-present—nurtured through books, music, and art. Ceramics became my true passion, a sanctuary where I connect deeply with my authentic self. Working with clay is a dialogue—dynamic and honest, filled with unexpected turns, challenges, and moments of harmony. The clay and I shape each other through resistance and resolution, until the fire transforms it into something lasting.
Before focusing solely on ceramics, my career took me through a variety of enriching experiences. From 2001 to 2019, I was a co-founder and partner at SaLA Design, an art and decor concept store in São Paulo. There, I co-created products, curated collections, and organized exhibitions for both emerging and established artists. It was an exciting time for Brazil’s art and design scene, and a standout moment was presenting our ceramic collection at Le Bon Marché in Paris for the Bresil Rive Gauche exhibition. In 2009, I furthered my skills studying Interior Design at the Panamerica School of Arts. In 2017, I became a partner at Bia Daidone, where I manage supplier relationships and collaborate on designing luxury jewelry and bespoke furniture, blending materials like metals, stones, wood, and ceramics. Our work has gained recognition from architects and decorators, earning features in publications like Architectural Digest.
My path has been a blend of art and design, but ceramics is where I’ve found my center. It requires patience and humility, offering profound rewards in return—a genuine labor of love.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? Not quite, but it’s been a deeply rewarding journey, full of discoveries and growth—not just in ceramics, but in self-awareness, resilience, and the constant practice of humility and patience. Ceramics, like a wise mother, teaches us to recognize our limits while gently pushing us to surpass them. It humbles us, reminding us that we can’t control everything and that some forces are beyond our will. Beyond these personal challenges, I’m now navigating the task of creating in a new country, having moved from Brazil to the United States. Connecting with and discovering other artists and ceramists here has been a wonderful experience—I’ve found a vibrant, welcoming community that’s embraced me warmly.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is undoubtedly very personal and functional. I’m deeply passionate about the sgraffito technique—an Italian method where underglaze is applied to raw clay, then scratched away to reveal intricate designs underneath. It’s a process that demands precision, the right tools, and a sharp eye for detail, and I’ve even been invited to give talks on it, which has been a real honor. I specialize in creating pieces that blend this artistry with practicality, and I’m known for the unique, hands-on nature of my designs. What I’m most proud of, though, is contributing my work to charity auctions in Brazil to support underserved communities—it’s a meaningful way I’ve found to give back through art. What sets me apart? I’d say it’s the combination of my authentic style, my love for sgraffito, and the way I weave purpose into every piece.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For me, what’s worked well—and what I’d recommend—is staying open and getting involved in as many fairs, exhibitions, or events in your field as possible. In my case, art fairs have been incredible for meeting people from all over, with diverse backgrounds that enrich our lives. These encounters often spark connections that last a long time. My advice? Show up, engage, and let those opportunities naturally build your network or lead you to a mentor.
