Rising Stars: Meet Zaire Sims

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaire Sims.

Hi Zaire, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I graduated from Xavier University with a B.A. in biology and a minor in Business Administration in 2015. A year later, I started my career in histology. I’ve always been a crafty person. So, in 2018 I decided to turn my crafting hobby into a side hustle. At the same time, I picked up a part-time job at a different lab.

I saved up to buy my house in 2019 at the age of 25! A year later, COVID struck and my full-time job furloughed a majority of the staff. I was terrified that I was going to lose my house. During those 9 weeks, I poured everything I had into growing my business, spending time with my kids, and fixing up my house. My business took off! Once my job called me to come back to work, I was devastated. I truly enjoyed every bit of being home with my kids and growing my business all from my home that I love so dearly.

Once I got back to work, a coworker asked me how I was feeling about being back. I explained to him how hard it was to leave my kids and slow down on orders. As the conversation went on, he asked me if my business can support me, my girls, and all of the bills. I said yes. He then asked me, “Well, why are you here then?” That question stuck with me for two entire weeks. I never fathomed the idea of turning my side hustle into a full-blown business!

Two weeks later I put my two weeks notice in. June 19, 2020, was the last time I clocked in for someone else!

I have a customization business. I make anything from shirts to storefront decals to balloon setups. Truly a one-stop shop. The growth has been amazing, especially since I can focus solely on my craft. I was able to hire a balloon install assistant, Kya and I recently hired a graphic artist, Kiersten. I’ve also partnered with a local baker, Jazmine!

The growth is amazing and I’m so grateful for everyone that has supported along the way! Flair by Zaire will be a household name

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle I’ve come across is the unknown. For example, I had to teach myself a lot about running a business. From things like sales and use tax to bookkeeping. Another struggle is the simple fact that every penny I make is solely based on me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Most crafty people have one particular niche. I do not. I am the type of person that wants to do it all. I can make a flyer for a birthday party, the balloons, outfit, and then turn around and put decals on a storefront window.

I’m known for being able to do it all!

I am most proud of that aspect! I’m always ready for a new challenge.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have a huge support system! But I can definitely say, my boyfriend. He is a successful business owner himself and he drops so much knowledge, even without trying. I’m very grateful for him. My cousin, Eric, and everyone I surround myself with.
