Sierra Barnes of Southeast Dallas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Sierra Barnes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Sierra, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I’m creating my art, I enter a meditative state where time seems to disappear. It brings me a deep sense of joy, peace, and reconnection to myself—especially when life feels out of balance. It’s a feeling I wish everyone could experience.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an artist, writer, blogger, and brain tumor thriver. I was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma (a brain tumor) in 2002 at the age of five, and shortly after, I discovered my love for art. I create abstract and abstract figurative paintings, each infused with crystals such as rose quartz and amethyst. Every piece also includes an original poem handwritten by me on the back, adding a personal and soulful touch.

I also offer *Spirit-Led Art*—custom pieces guided by intuition, oracle card pulls, and crystal infusions—each created with the intention of delivering the exact energy and message the recipient most needs. I paint intuitively, allowing colors, textures, and techniques to flow naturally while setting positive intentions with every brushstroke. My goal is for my art to not only uplift a space visually but also elevate its energy. Creating is a form of meditation for me—one that has carried me through some of the most challenging times in my life.

Beyond my art, I share my story through my blog and social media, where I post about lifestyle, wellness, and spirituality, along with my ongoing journey as a brain tumor thriver. At the heart of everything I do is one purpose: to inspire, uplift, and remind others of the strength, beauty, resilience that live within us all, and that they too can thrive through the chaos, mess, and beautiful imperfections!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child—and even now—I’ve been judged by others. Growing up, it wasn’t just from other kids, but adults as well. I experienced some really difficult moments when people said hurtful things and made unkind comments about me. As a child, I allowed those words and opinions to define or limit me. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to release them.
I’m still healing and working through some of those experiences, but I now recognize that every person and challenge along the way has shaped me into who I am today. I no longer let those moments hold me back—I embrace them as part of my story and my strength.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I’ve never hidden my pain or the experiences I’ve been through. As an artist, I’ve always expressed them through my art and writing. I created my first painting, “Complicated,” at the age of five, shortly after returning home from undergoing brain surgery. Art has been my voice ever since—a way to express every emotion and transform my healing into something beautiful.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
When I share on social media—whether it’s my art or moments from my day-to-day life—I always aim to be transparent and authentic. I deeply value honesty and staying true to who I am. Whether I’m online or in the public eye, I make it a priority to stay grounded and remind myself that those meant to connect with me will naturally understand and resonate with my journey—and those who don’t, that’s okay too.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I start my day with my morning routine, which includes meditation, gratitude journaling, and a peaceful walk. These moments of stillness bring me clarity and balance. Beyond that, my art is another source of deep peace for me. When I’m creating, I feel grounded, calm, and completely at ease.
