Story & Lesson Highlights with Chef DeeJay Ferguson of Fort Worth

We recently had the chance to connect with Chef DeeJay Ferguson and have shared our conversation below.

Chef DeeJay, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Usually quiet reflection that promptly is followed by a hungry 7 year old.
I’ve been trying not to grab my phone first thing in the morning and instead sit in the sunlight.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chef Wyze, but you can call me DeeJay. I was born and raised in Buffalo, New York.
I’ve loved food since I can remember. From watching my mother prepare family meals with so much love, to watching my grandparents feed the neighborhood I just loved the feeling of all the love around good food and I knew it was what I wanted to do.
I definitely took the scenic route to get here, but I think the journey made me a better person, and above all a better Chef.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think pride and ego breaks the bonds between people the most. I think effective communication, and not just honesty, but transparency is key in helping restore those bonds.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of never being good enough.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My family and my art.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Early mornings, before the phone, before everything starts moving. Also, on walks.
