We recently had the chance to connect with Florida Palmore and have shared our conversation below.
Florida, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My days start the same most days. I get my children ready for school and drop them off. From there I’m back home to either study script or do character development. If I’m not doing either of those I’m on set filming.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Florida (like the state) and I’ve been acting since 2001. Some would say I’ve been acting my entire life but it wasn’t until I moved to Texas, started preforming in front of an audience and portraying different characters, that I truly started. I’ve done everything from stage productions, television, commercials, film and even stand up comedy. I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams but after about a year I found myself back in Dallas. Once I moved back to Dallas I found myself working an ordinary job that I used as my excuse to not pursue my dreams. Thankfully in 2023 I was asked to get involved again and I haven’t stopped since.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother! She taught me about God, which laid the foundation that I’m building on now. She encouraged my artistic side and affirmed me daily. She’s the person who loved me unconditionally and guided me to pursue my dreams.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. In 2013 I went through some of the toughest times of my life. Moving back to Dallas from Los Angeles and attempting to pursue my dreams didn’t go as planned. It was like I left the dreamer in me back in LA. The lack of an artist community drained me. Unfortunately, I didn’t know how or where to refill my empty tank.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My children. I’m sure any parent would agree that your children are your reason. Watching them evolve pushes me daily. Their curiosity about life and all it’s possibilities reminds me to keep dreaming.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m just relaxing with my kids and when I’m on set. Those moments are when I’m at peace.
