We recently had the chance to connect with HARSHAD KANETKAR and have shared our conversation below.
Hi HARSHAD, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
For me a normal is I create, think and explore new things in music. I may not find new ones every day but atleast I get a direction where I am suppose to go.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a professional full time music performer, creater and teacher. I play “Tabla” which is the most popular Indian percussion instrument and popular globally. Almost 8 months in a year I am busy with my travel for the concert performances in USA and abroad. Being a freelance musician I play with different musicians who are from India as well as western musicians in Jazz from USA. I am based in Dallas fortworth metroplex and teach arround 90 students who age in between 7 to 60. People can visit my facebook page avartantablaandmusic academy dallas. Students who has interest in music and wants to persue this art can contact.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I have learned from different masters in this field for so many years. I started learning Tabla and music when I was 5 or 6 and then the journey begins. I have seen, observed and experience very closely with the greatest people in this field who were not my teachers or mentors but I got to learned so many things which I will never forget in my life. I had a close association with the greatest Tabla player in the century and I have learned so many things which I will never forget.
I feel learning doesn’t need to be all the the time formal but it can be experienced in its own way.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There are always ups and downs in our music field as the uncertainty is always there. Its different when you know that this field is uncertain but its very hard to see and experience those ups and downs. I never ever thought of giving up as the main strong point which hold me strong is my music and trust on this art and my work.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think there are very very few people who can be your good friends. The true friend is the one who stands with you and support, protect you in your tough time. He or she is the one who all the time keeps you reminding you about who you are and what you are suppose to do. They are the mirror holders.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I think people will remember my work my music and that is the most important thing people will remember forever.
