Story & Lesson Highlights with Ivette Moreno of Grand Prairie

Ivette Moreno shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Ivette, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me consists of CHAOS. Taking care of my kids, 2 under 2, is my current priority, and finding time to squeeze in a little bit of work is a daily struggle. I became a stay at home mom after having my second child this past January, and my schedule is constantly changing based on his naptimes. Sometimes I have to work in the middle of the night (12 AM-4 AM) just to finish my tumbler orders.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Ivette & I am the owner of Maestra Creations where we make glitteres epoxy tumblers using Stanleys and other brands. I’m a former teacher from Dallas, Texas, and I’ve been making tumblers since 2018. I started this journey back then when I bought a Cricut wanting to DIY decorations for my classroom. I was very unhappy back then. I was dealing with unrealistic demands from admin, and my health began to become affected. I had anxiety, depression, and Cystic Acne caused by my stress. I remember driving to work and just feeling like a dark rainy cloud was following me everywhere. Although I never imagined I could live off my handmade products, I am very thankful and feel blessed that it has allowed me to stay home with my children. What initially helped me stand out was my willingness to help others in a similar position as me be able to start their own businesses to earn income for their families.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’m a rule follower. In school I was told I had to work hard and go to college to become successful. I did just that. My goals as a child were to become a doctor. In high school I later decided to become a nurse. In college after suffering from depression, I changed my goal to teaching, since I love children, I figured this would be the perfect career for me. My goals were all over the place before being a tumbler maker but they eventually led me here.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Post-Partum Depression has been very hard on me and my business. in 2020, aside from making tumblers I also sold glitter and vinyl sticker sheets, After having my first daughter, I almost gave up all together. Being a small business is extremely difficult and most people fail, and I couldn’t take the competition, the online hate, online bullying, not to mention business after 2020 was just not the same. The economy is/was going downhill and my PPD told me there was just no point in continuing on with my business. Unfortunately, I did let go of the glitter and vinyl selling. BUT I didn’t let go of my love for customizing Stanleys and I feel like that side of my business has flourished since then.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Everyone sees you differently. I am who I am and have never pretended to be someone else. I’ve been honest, I’m an introvert. I don’t like small talk, I won’t pretend to be an extrovert for a job or for people to feel more comfortable. I don’t have many friends, and my true outgoing self doesn’t come out to strangers. But I am caring, and helpful. I want to help others genuinely. That is why my business grew 5 years ago.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I work on my business 24/7. Whether it’s by posting something online, planning a new product to sell, sending a message to a brand. I’m hoping that the hard work I put into my business helps it grow successfully in 7-10 years.
