Story & Lesson Highlights with Kenny Poovey of Fort Worth

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kenny Poovey. Check out our conversation below.

Kenny, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What battle are you avoiding?
I am currently struggling to grieve the loss of my Father, he passed away last April. He was my biggest fan and my hero!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kenny Poovey and I am the singer for the Dallas/Fort Worth based band, “Fly Above Fire”

Fly Above Fire is a Christian nu-metal band who seeks to spread a positive message and create a place where everyone is welcome to come together as a family united by the joy of music and the desire to leave this world a better place than when we found it.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory was feeling power through the gift of song. I remember a man coming up to me at a local show when I was in my early 20’s, the man was a complete stranger, and he just came up to me and said, “your music saved my life”. I remember taking it very seriously…that was such a powerful statement to hear but then I quickly realized that is a perfect example of the power of music. Music is bigger than all of us when it comes wrapped with the power to relate or heal or to make you feel through the lyrics that you are not alone. When you know you have that connection with someone, it stays with you.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Fly Above Fire actually has a new single out right now, a song called “Suffer 11:32”.

This song addresses this question….”what does suffering teach you?”

Suffering builds strength and resilience.

So many times the band had a member change, quit or move on that it seemed easier to just quit and give up but that is the easy way out. Anytime things would go well for us, the devil seemed to get in the way…..this is the same with faith…..that’s why it’s called “faith”.

Instead suffering has turned our focus into something much bigger than us, we keep getting up when we get knocked down and each time, we come back stronger and wiser.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would tell you that my family, faith, friends and music/film are what really matters to me. I think its very special since much of my friends and family are either part of movies that I have been blessed to be a part of or they are a part of the band in some way or another.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Stop procrastinating and make as many memories as possible. Life is too short and you cannot take possessions with you. In the end, it will be my wife, my family, my friends and memories.
