Story & Lesson Highlights with Maya Skinner of DeSoto

We recently had the chance to connect with Maya Skinner and have shared our conversation below.

Maya, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I definitely believe in a morning routine: I wake up, thank God for a new day and I read my Bible and devotional book. Next, I make my bed. I try to get a good stretch in either by my own set or watching a yoga video on YouTube. Sometimes I’ll walk my pink treadmill and do a few sets of lifting. Then it’s time for skincare, I love washing my face in the mornings. By this time I’m ready for breakfast and I have to feed my little fur baby, Winston.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maya Skinner. I’m a former news anchor and reporter, who decided to forge her own path in media. I do content creation on TikTok, host my own podcast on YouTube, I work for an advertising company, The Waves Page, and run the social media pages for my mom’s fast-food restaurant, The Tater Shack.

What makes my brand special is the freedom to create whatever I think is interesting. My niche is pink, fun and girly lifestyle videos that people can relate to. My podcast was created as a safe space to talk about various topics and give people their own voice.

Writing and media has always been a part of my life as young girl. Seeing how people feel so connected to icons like Oprah, Wendy Williams and even the latest podcast influencers like Robyn Dixon and Gizelle Bryant has always been so fascinating to me.

I hope to connect with the DFW metroplex in the same way. I’m working on getting more episodes out for my podcast and would like to collaborate with others to make some fun content.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
To me, bonds break when someone stops becoming reliable. A lot of relationships are built on trust, being there for one another, just knowing that they have your back.

I’ve gone through some friendship and romantic break-ups where elements of trust and being genuine are not present anymore. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that the power of any relationship really lies in the hands of the person that cares less.

What restores them? There has to be mutual understanding and desire to want to come together. But you have to want to do it, not feel forced or faking it. If not, it’s just not meant to be. But I believe people that are meant to be together will find their way back, some things just take time.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself. I didn’t really start standing up for myself until I got to college. It’s not about cussing people out or anything like that, but just letting people know how you feel.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
One person I admire is Tyler Perry. I think his story is so inspirational. People like him, who pushed through obstacles to create their own universe of art is something a lot of us should strive to do. He gives back and hires regular people for his work. I love that he gives people a chance to show their talents, along with being paid their worth.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I would love to build a community with lots of homes for people in need, more shopping centers and places where people can create and build wealth.
