Story & Lesson Highlights with Meredith May

We recently had the chance to connect with Meredith May and have shared our conversation below.

Meredith, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day? Well… I am not sure there is ever a “normal” day. If you call a mountain of balloons, client calls, and last-minute orders “normal” and then add to that the responsibilities of being a mom I think most women could paint a pretty good picture. I start with a plan, and my day starts around 6:30AM but somehow I am juggling deliveries, design ideas, and a hundred tiny surprises all day. Even in the sometimes chaos I am so grateful to create moment s that make people smile and feel known- there’s really no better kind of busy or “normal”.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello Balloon Besties! I’m Meredith May and I have the privilege of owning and running Color Wonder Balloons. We use custom balloon design to turn celebrations, meetings, and events into unforgettable experiences. What makes us special isn’t just the balloons- it’s the creativity, attention to detail, and prayerful care and consideration over each order that allow our customers to become friends and loyal balloon besties.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
The short answer? My mom. She worked three jobs and still somehow found the time and energy to be fully present with me. From her, I learned the value of hard work, grit, and showing up for the people who matter- even when life feels full. I am so grateful for her leadership and example by doing to teach me that putting God first and then loving people and working enthusiastically matter most.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! There have definitely been moments where running a business felt overwhelming, and I thought about giving up because it seemed like it would be easier. But when I step back and look at the bigger picture and remember that the Lord called me to this business to ultimately give Him the glory and serve my community to build something I love that can celebrate others- that perspective keep me going, even on the tough days.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest pitfall we all fall into in the event industry is that everything can- or should- be perfect. The truth is, perfection is impossible, and chasing it can drain the joy our of what we do. Some of the most memorable moments happen because of a goof and end up “making” the event. Especially today with AI, people are craving something real and I think there is real beauty when things do not always go exactly as planned.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I think the thing I’d regret the most is not fully embracing the moments with the people I love while I have the chance. It’s easy to get caught up in work, projects, and the day-to-day, but the memories we make with family and friends- that’s the real legacy. Showing up for people and loving them like Jesus, I want to look back knowing I showed up like that, even amidst the craziness of running a business.
