Story & Lesson Highlights with Michelle Noah of Bankhead Cultural Arts District

Michelle Noah shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Michelle, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
As an Artist with my own business I would have to say energy is what drives my Art and my business. Of course I want my work to have integrity and quality. But you can’t crest Art without Energy and Inspiration.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Michelle Noah and I am the owner of Ninth Street Gallery. I opened my doors June of 2016, so I’m coming up on a full decade of having my own Art business. Ninth Street Gallery is part of the Bankhead Cultural Arts District. In historic downtown Garland Texas. I just finished an exhibition of 10 paintings at the Granville Performing Arts Center. Bankhead is a very supportive arts community.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Having my own space to create has really shaped how I see things and given me the motivation to express myself. When I open the door to my studio it opens so many opportunities to create art and to think about what is important and what inspires me. The solitude and no interruptions gives me the time I need to contemplate the importance of Art and what I want it to say and how I hope it makes people feel.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
In the very early stages of my Art Career I was mentored by another more experienced artist. On a Sunday afternoon at her home we had a group of women Artist sharing our hopes and dreams about our art. In my naive innocence I suggested we all do an exhibit together. My mentor in front of the entire group said do you even have anything to put in an exhibit?
I was crushed and humiliated. I said nothing in response. When I got in my car to drive home I felt a fire burning in my soul! It turned a negative into a positive! I have never been more motivated or inspired to produce enough good quality Art that I could say with confidence Yes I have a nice collection for a show.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That the price tag on a piece of art gives it value. Creating art that speaks to someone and lifts the up gives it Value. Beauty and Technique give it value. Not everyone is going to love your brand of art but money doesn’t have the last word on value.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I loved my family. That I was a good friend. That I helped individuals when they needed it most.
