Story & Lesson Highlights with Ms. Mya Evans of Dallas, Texas

We recently had the chance to connect with Ms. Mya Evans and have shared our conversation below.

Mya, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work lately I’ve been enjoying watching sunrises, sunsets, and reading adventure books.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure, my name Mya Evans and I am an artist from the DFW area. I have trained in styles ranging from Liturgical dance, traditional drill, African, Afro-Fusion, Hip hop, Majorette, Heels, Modern, Jazz, and Ballet. I graduated from Texas Women’s University in 2023 with my B.A. in Dance. I have danced works by Abdel Sallam, Michelle Gibson, and Bryan Peters. I have taught at international dance festivals like Bailando and can be most recently seen assisting Michelle Gibson in residency at the University of Texas at Austin for her work; “Altar of Humanity: The Convocation, The Resolution,The Benediction”. I currently teach dance at GWC STEM Learning Center where I am humbled and honored to act as the artistic director for the school’s dance company, GWC Constellations, a name I created for the school’s dance company which has been under my direction since the fall of 2023. I also have a production company High Caliber Divisions. The company’s vision is to, “Evolve the perspective of people of the African Diaspora in media through all lenses.” In the fall I will be attending Howard University to begin pursuing my M.ed in Educational Leadership & Policy. I’m hoping this career pivot will help strive towards getting more funding for the arts in inner cities across America. My long term goal is to continue to work towards dancing, producing, choreographing, and learning about dance all over the world. It is through all these avenues that I will continue to work to provide service, cultivate community and make dance education more accessible to all.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I believed that my sensitivity was my flaw. As I grow older and step deeper into my relationship with God, humanism, womanhood, and artistry I have been realizing that my sensitivity
derives from the depths of passion. That passion pushes me to express, create, to feel. My sensitivity in practice allows me to offer different perspectives in my art and on my assignments.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Failure has allowed me to change my mind on how I view failing itself. It is not a sentence finisher but a comma. Failing allows you to measure where you are, track your progress, all while giving you tools to better access what to do next. Through failing, comes truth, clarity, and better understanding.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
God is always guiding you. Even in your mess, even in your storm you are always exactly where you’re suppose to be.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
Any opportunity where I had the chance to love and did not try,
