We recently had the chance to connect with Sabreeyah Hackett and have shared our conversation below.
Sabreeyah, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
What I think others are secretly struggling with—but never say is fear. I believe people fear who they want to be. Who they want to be comes with commitment, self respect, dependence, vulnerability, accountability, acceptance, and intense healing. This type of transformation is scary, even intimidating. So they stay where it’s comfortable, predictable, controlled, and validating. I believe others biggest fear is knowing thy self.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sabreeyah Hackett. I’m from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in Dallas, Texas. I attended Howard and Prairie View A&M University majoring in Psychology. Though I did not finish my degree, my love for understanding others still follows me as I fall into my passion. Dose of Melanin: A Safe Space was birthed in Washington D.C while I attended Howard University. Fast forward, I am a Licensed Cosmetologist with a successful natural hair care business located in Arlington, TX inside, The Slay Lounge. Client after client, I experience my energy becoming a safe space for so many as hair provided for me. I witness my education within my conversation and in the advice I give. I witness the full circle God has always had planned for me. What makes me unique is my warmth & integrity. I provide the energy/knowledge that allows clients to decompress knowing their strands are in good hands. Dose of Melanin will always prioritize mental health. This is a safe space to be vulnerable & yourself completely.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My Grandmother. I lost her February 7th, 2025. I admired her so much. She took pride in work. Doing for herself. Building and creating whatever came to her. She was a teacher also. Just like me, she had a love for others. Though sometimes she did not see her own light or purpose; I always seen it. How she was deeply rooted in her faith. She was loyal and dependable. A passionate lover. Simply observing her taught me everything about work. It taught me pride in having my own. Depending on myself as a woman. She always encouraged me to go after hair. Our last one on one was that exactly. She always told me she was proud of me. Pushing me to keep going no matter the outside noise. If it weren’t for our last conversation, I wouldn’t have had the battery charge I needed to keep going. Strong work ethic runs in all the women in my family because of our grandmother. Forever grateful for everything she instilled in me without even knowing it.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell younger Sabreeyah, you have always known your light. Very well. We’ve always had this feeling that we were meant for greatness. I would apologize for allowing so many to abuse, manipulate, and steal that light. To the point of losing self. I would tell her, you are meant to be different. From your gap, to your natural Afro, brown skin, sensitivity, and expressive style. You are never meant to blend or to be understood. You are meant to be you because you are inspiring. Your authenticity will trigger insecurity in others for the rest of your life. Don’t allow attacks to dim your spirit. Your light will attract all things. It will open doors, but will also be the reason many close. Stay true to self. Listen to your intuition and follow it always. It’ll never steer you wrong. Lastly, I’ll tell her you’re never alone. God has been and will always be with you. All is takes is talking to him. Start from there and see where life takes you.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
Hair is a very spiritual practice & salons are spiritual sanctuaries. As hairstylists, we have the ability to raise or lower spirits. We are seen as therapist, doctors, and stylists all in one. We have the ability to bring people back to themselves or a new version of self. What we radiate is put right into our clients. It is scientifically proven that energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Therefore, when our hands are massaging your entire head, energy is transferred between both the client & stylist. You’re allowing us in as much as we are. I strongly believe this is why who is for you is for you. You feel it. It will feel right and like you’ve known the stylist longer than you truly have. If it does not feel right or you find constant complications, trust yourself and find a more aligned stylist.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace alone. Solitude is my favorite thing in the world. Though it gets lonely, it’s much preferred to being around others constantly. I’ve studied people all my life so I recognize patterns easily. Sometimes even when I don’t want to. This makes me very wary of others. So my solitude is where I love to be. Alone with music. I could never live without music. I would probably go insane without it. Just as hair provides me fulfillment, music is right behind it. Whether I am making or listening to it, music will always bring me peace. My favorite part of the day is when I’m in bed with all the light off. Headphones on playing underrated R&B with my eyes closed. I dream without actually dreaming.
