Story & Lesson Highlights with Sarah Rees of Plano

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Rees. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Sarah, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first part of my day begins with a cup of coffee! Being a one-woman operation, mornings are when I touch base with potential new clients, making sure everyone has the information and support they need to get started. I also return emails and phone calls before diving into the rest of my day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Brave Space Counseling specializes in Play Therapy and counseling for kids, teens, and adults. We primarily focus on treating children with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, adoption-related concerns, divorce, grief, and other life stressors and transitions.

A unique aspect of our practice is the collaborative approach we take with caregivers, schools, doctors, and other helping professionals. We provide support for parents alongside their child’s individual therapy to help them increase confidence in parenting, better understand their child, and reduce overall stress. Through Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) and Child-Parent Relationship Training (CPRT), parents gain education and practical strategies to support their child at home.

At Brave Space, we tailor our approach to each family, treating the child as a whole, not just the problem. While we help manage unwanted behaviors driven by intense emotions, we also work to increase confidence, self-esteem, responsibility, and healthy communication. We take pride in the quality of care we provide to every family we serve.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Trust is both fragile and foundational. When it is broken, the connection between people can weaken or even fracture, creating distance, doubt, and emotional pain. Yet trust is also the very thing needed to repair those same relationships. Rebuilding it requires time, consistency, honesty, and a willingness to understand one another. Without trust, relationships struggle to feel safe or supportive, making it difficult for them to truly thrive. When trust is nurtured, however, it becomes the anchor that allows relationships to grow stronger, more resilient, and more connected.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
I remember creating a lot of art projects while listening to music when I had big emotions. Whether I was painting or crafting, those moments felt like a quiet refuge during times of stress. I tended to be happiest when I had the freedom to express myself through creation, turning my emotions into something tangible as a way of processing, expressing, and finding peace with them.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends and family would tell you that honesty matters most to me. Truth and openness are what keep my relationships strong and steady. Without them, trust is fragile, and everything else can start to crumble. When honesty is present, connections feel real, supportive, and grounded.

That… and let’s be honest, a snuggly kitty, a cup of coffee, and a good book can cure just about anything!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me for my willingness to help others with genuine care and compassion. More than anything, I want the story people tell to reflect my dedication to creating a safe, supportive space for children to heal their hurts, discover their strengths, and grow into compassionate, capable adults. That legacy of kindness, safety, and growth is the one I hope to leave behind.
