Story & Lesson Highlights with Steph Abdul of Downtown

Steph Abdul shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Steph, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Absolutely! There have been several times where impatient thoughts and feelings have begun to form due to lack of communication from a customer or client or even lack of overall consideration for me as an entrepreneur. And in those moments, one side of me wants to drop everything and walk away from that particular situation. However, I stop, pray, and consider myself a tool for the people and an avenue people use to express themselves and capture moments for the rest of time. When I exercise patience and don’t “jump the gun” so to speak, I really envision and see just how essential waiting a reasonable amount of time can be; for myself and those whom I serve.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Steph and I have been a professional photographer and videographer for the last 6 years. I reside in the great state of Texas and have loved every minute of being here. I started doing professional visuals during COVID since I was out of work and felt like I wasn’t really getting anywhere. I picked up a camera from a local pawn shop and started my journey as a photographer initially as a hobby. That hobby grew to be something that really saved me and my heart and I have never regretted it.

I think what makes StephTheShooter so special and unique is that I put my heart into what I do. I create with an aim to really give a glimpse as to what goes on in my mind; a place only one person can see…that being me. I try my best to make everyone I encounter and work with happy inside and out and give the chance for people to let loose and feel free to be themselves.

In recent times I have shifted to more content creation but still adding my own twist on it all. I used to feel a way when I wouldn’t go viral or maybe my posts wouldn’t do so well compared to other creates in my niche. But nowadays, I really have embraced that my creations may not suit everyone but they make me happy.

I also am into Western Fashion and Cowboy Culture and I have been able to augment my content creation abilities to match the style of a Western world. From GRWMs to Styling videos and even the catchy, witty trends that come and go, I can just say that doing it all really grants me the chance to show that I love to create authentic, one of one content.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child and even going into my early 20’s, I didn’t believe I was anyone…at all. I never had confidence growing up. I was bullied as a kid and a teenager for being a nerd and for my religion. I always doubted myself and never had the strength to pat myself on the back. But when I tuned into my inner self and began to let God mold me, not the world, I found purpose, peace, and power. And I’m never going to let that go.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have many times, but of them stood above others. In November of 2023, I felt I was alone and had no purpose. I couldn’t get a grip on internal love for myself. I just felt lost. And because of that, I tried to take my own life. It’s a decision i made selfishly but I felt, “Who is going to care?” Well, one person cared; God. He guided me and saved me and opened my eyes to my potential and how valuable I am no matter what my imperfect mind was telling me. To comfort me, He allowed me a pathway into the Western world of cowboying, rodeos, and creativity on a whole new scale. I still fight back tears when I think about that time. I’m just happy that I can be here still to experience joy beyond compare now.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I have to say the 3 part value system of God, family, and hard work in that order. We all need a basis for everything we do. I’ve found that incorporating that system in my life gives me peace; and peace is what we all strive for.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I know I am right with God. When I am doing all I can to fight for my faith and to emphasize how my faith is my guiding light, I feel serene inside.
