Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee and Melissa Scurry.
Lee and Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in the church, I always knew I was meant to do more within my ministry. Around 2012, I decided I wanted to take my ministry to the next level outside of the church and become a Gospel Artist/Motivational Speaker (Singer/Rapper/Songer/Speaker) so I prayed for God to give me a vehicle to do that in a way that would allow me to share that gift without reliance on financial gains. I wanted my musical talents to be shared as my passion and to sow into His kingdom.
In 2013, my wife and I along with our 3 boys (at the time 6 yrs., 2 yrs., and 6 months old) stepped out on faith and away from everything and everyone we knew to a place I’ve never been; an over 1500 mile drive away to North Texas. For several years, I worked in the IT industry in several companies, including the corporate building of Texas Health Resources but I knew entrepreneurship was the way to go. After both my wife and I lost our fathers, Christ began to be more present in our lives. 10 months after I lost my father, my wife lost her father and we were barely able to replenish our savings from one catastrophic lost to another so we found ourselves in a very hard place. I began to pray and ask God to provide more for us in a way that our time will be freed up and give us more availability for Him. Immediately after, God gave me the name “Omni”, meaning in all ways or all things, which reminded me of one of my favorite scriptures, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). “Sparkle” serves a double meaning, referring to us after being washed by His blood becoming brand new or sparkling clean as well as the level of quality we commit to giving our customers.
Months later, we launched our company OmniSparkle Janitorial Services, LLC, in 2016. My wife worked in it primarily until she left her job to work in the business full time. In February of this year, as God would have it, I parted ways with my job and began to work in our company full time as well. For a year and a half now, we’ve serviced the entire Dallas/Fort Worth and Metroplex areas and will be branching off to the east coast where our second location will be launching in the future.
Has it been a smooth road?
When we started the company in 2016, it was definitely not a smooth road. Since we wanted to get contracts as quickly as possible, we partnered with a company that would give us contracts for a fee. After working with them for several months, we realized gaining customers with them would mean that we would lack full control with how we serviced them. One of the issues was that we were told not to communicate with the customers at all, which is nearly impossible to do if you actually want to please them. We found that communication was often lost and took an unnecessarily long period of time. Another issue was with finding reliable workers to join our team. Since the industry is seen as low-skilled work, it can attract some people that want to give low effort and use it as an easy job to grab until something more permanent comes up. Lastly, janitorial services are often paid on a monthly basis, so we had to learn how to be prepared for any financial responsibilities while waiting to be paid.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Omnisparkle Janitorial Services story. Tell us more about the business.
At OmniSparkle Janitorial Services LLC, we pride ourselves on reliability, great communication, integrity and quality work. Unlike other janitorial companies, we take cleaning seriously. We strongly believe in giving our absolute best in all of our projects, no matter how big or small. We work with various types of facilities such as churches, offices, auto shops, restaurants, studios, etc.
Many of my relatives also were professional cleaners for decades, cleaning in hotels and hospitals. So with their advice and my experience, working in the cleaning industry for 15 years, including cleaning the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia back home and also receiving my Housekeeping Hospitality Management certification, we have become experts in our trade and always strive to keep our clients abreast on their particular task or project. We’re constantly learning about new equipment and ways to service our clients proficiently.
With our company, all of our cleaners are thoroughly trained on how to perform each cleaning task, as well as on important safety issues. Our goal is to clean each client’s facility professionally and safely while consistently leaving them with an overall phenomenal presentation. Another concept that we are starting to implement is the OmniSparkle Apprenticeship program where we train contractors to become franchisees.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Janitorial services continue to be a highly competitive industry because of its low initial investment and high opportunities for profit. Texas is one of the top 5 states where janitorial services can be very lucrative. Therefore, we see lots of continued growth in the number of janitorial companies being launched. So we plan to be constantly growing and developing innovative ways to service our clients quickly and efficiently and building a strong team. A common mistake janitorial service companies consistently make is not evolving with the industry and that is something we work to avoid.
