Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Cue.
Hi Matthew, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Detroit, MI, I am 1 of five children between my mom and dad. In my youth, I was always writing or drawing. At that time, I was very private about my artistic abilities. One day I was able to show those abilities at a church youth service along with my brother and some other youth. From there, we formed a group called Only 1 Way. I learned how to produce music and produced % 95 percent of our albums alongside my brother. From there, we performed all over the city and were fortunate enough to get booked in other cities across the U.S. We performed and spoke at many community events, such as back to school, fundraising charity events. I was really happy with the impact and the people we were helping. After years of music, touring, and ups and downs, we decided to take a break from music. At this point, we’re full-grown adults. We both began families and started new chapters in our lives. We moved to Dallas from Detroit for a fresh start. One day, I wrote a song called freedom. Didn’t really think much of it, but it felt good writing after so many years of not doing it. I let a few music buddies of mine hear the song, and they loved it so much! From there, it was placed in an ad with Volkswagen and Jansport! I couldn’t believe it! My music was heard internationally, specifically in Paris, France. I collaborated with a few artists from there. Now I’m more focused on getting my music placements. I have a few upcoming ones that I’m not at liberty to talk about because they’re not out yet. I’ve been able to perform at a few notable places here in the DFW area one being the House of Blues. Looking forward to connecting more with the community and making an impact on lives here.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been struggles. There have been times when money wasn’t where it should be. One time we were on tour and ran out of money. We were renting a car at the time and didn’t know how we were going to keep renting it! Luckily after a great performance, we were able to sell merch and albums, enough to continue to rent the car and eat for the night.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an artist that specializes in hip hop. I produce write and perform all my music. I’ve been able to do this for 10-plus years.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My fav childhood memory is sitting down with my dad and my sibling to create music. My dad had his guitar, my bro was on the keyboard, and I carried the beat, my younger brother was there too, but I’m sure he was just yelling on the microphone. My dad came up with the lyrics “I can’t sleep.” Come to think of it; it was a nice tune!
