Hidden Gems: Meet LaTanya Brooks of Grow With STEM

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTanya Brooks.

Hi LaTanya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always wanted to write books but didn’t have a clear vision. The more I learned about my school district’s mission for STEM education and its exposure in the school system, the more I became involved in that initiative. I realized that I could write books that could inspire kids to pursue STEM careers–children that would have never otherwise thought about it. From there, I volunteered to go to schools and children’s festivals to speak to children about their future aspirations. My goal is to encourage children to dream big and not be limited by other’s expectations of them.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to success has not been smooth. I hit a lot of road bumps on my way to publishing success. I was green and did not understand the industry at all. I made plenty of mistakes and lost money in the process. However, I wouldn’t take anything away from my experience. Those experiences made me a savvy publisher and business person, pushing me to help others to avoid the same pitfalls presented by vanity publishers. In the words of Leo Tolstoy, “Do not fear the lack of knowledge, fear false knowledge.” For this reason, I decided to create my own publishing company that would empower “would be” authors with the knowledge and tools they need to become successful.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grow With STEM?
Grow With STEM promotes STEM awareness and social-emotional learning by designed books that inspire children to pursue STEM related careers while being responsive to the world around them. This is important because STEM careers are sustainable careers that pay well while promoting a future of social awareness and benevolence, at the same time, making the world a better place. My goal is for my books to prompt children and their parents to start conversations about future aspirations and how they can use their talents to benefit others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I wish I would have known the difference between traditional, self and vanity publishing. There are disadvantages and advantages to each. I urge anyone who enters into world of self-publishing to ask plenty of questions and do their research. It is a rewarding endeavor that requires research and experience. If ever there is a question, do not hesitate to reach out to I created this site to help “would be” authors to become successful while avoiding the pitfalls that I had to endure.
