Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Norris.
Hi Carmen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Before I was able to read I loved getting lost in stories, which quickly morphed into a lifelong passion for writing. That blended together in unexpected ways when I stumbled across book boxes and became obsessed. After trying out different ones I realized I needed one that focused solely on thriller and horror books. I couldn’t find what I wanted so I created one that combined my love of writing and darker-themed books. Today I celebrate 19 months in business, an award-winning book subscription box, award-winning podcast and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle has been letting people know Bad Alibi Book Box is here. Being more well known would certainly help with growth. While I’ll certainly be happy when that time comes I currently focus my energy into providing the best experience possible with the boxes that go out to my current customers.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I curate experiences around stories. Creating stories and bringing them to people is my specialty. That’s why I pay writers to have their short stories and mini-mysteries (riddles) in the box each month. I want to give my subscribers more ways to enjoy escaping into new worlds, no matter how brief.
I also started the Bad Alibi podcast so that I could use my own writing to give people more twisted stories to dive into.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There have been so many people who have shown their support in different ways and I appreciate each of them. My mom uses Bad Alibi Book Box as her one-stop-shop for gift giving. If she could she would single-handedly clear out all of my inventory. If I ever speak to someone after my husband has, they are able to tell me so much about my book box and podcast. It still gets me giddy each time. Their support is immeasurable and keeps me going on the rough days.
I’ve also made some amazing friends in the subscription box community that are always there to give advice and encouragement. I definitely try to pay it forward as much as I can.
