Meet Abundio Munoz of Abundio’s Fit Society in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abundio Munoz.

Abundio, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for fitness began at the age of ten when my parents signed me up for my first American taekwondo class in Bryan/College Station, and I have never looked back. I have spent my entire life in a fitness studio, early mornings and late nights, traveling to competitions and embracing all of the disciplines that comes with the lifestyle. It truly set me up for being the dedicated business owner I am today.

At the advice of one of my students, I moved to Fort Worth to open a martial arts studio at the age of 21 and have since become a fitness staple in Fort Worth providing private sessions and group classes out of premier studios including Texas Christian University, Hulen Health & Fitness Connection, Soul Fitness, and Inursha Fitness. I opened the doors to Abundio’s Studio, in 2010 and moved into our new home in The River District rebranded as Abundio’s Fit Society in 2016. Over the years, my expertise has evolved from martial arts into primarily personal training, where I thrive off of forming unshakeable bonds with my clients and providing a space and mentorship to top trainers to succeed in their journeys as well.

My studio has been graciously recognized and voted top awards such as Best Boutique Fitness Studio in annual Best Of features in Fort Worth publications. Some of my personal fitness accomplishments include reaching my 8th-degree black belt in American Taekwondo in 2011, being inducted into the Martial Arts Master’s Hall of Fame in 2013, along with taking several titles with the U.S. karate team, amateur boxing and kickboxing and bodybuilding competitions.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe in any business, there’s no success without the struggles and I’ve definitely had my fair share of ups and downs with perfecting our product. As a business owner that is always looking to evolve and keep clients satisfied, it’s hard not to get distracted by the next shiny object. We have pioneered boutique group fitness trends in Fort Worth, being a first to offer several methodologies under one roof from cardio kickboxing, to the party on a bike spin classes, to pilates and barre. But over the past five years, we have really redefined our mission and have become laser-focused on now only personal training and excelling in that area, niching down on who our ideal client is, knowing their struggles and how to provide the exact solution they need and want. It’s been an exciting road, but owning a small business is not for the weak, it takes passion first and foremost, determination, learning from your failures and pivoting when needed. Overall, I have kept my mind open and as long as I keep our clients satisfaction first, and even if some changes have seemed risky, they have always led me to bigger and better things.

Abundio’s Fit Society – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for being the premier destination for boutique personal training to Fort Worth’s finest. We are most proud of the close-knit relationships we form with our clients (some of whom we’ve had for the past 25 years); they know they are not just a number with us, we want the studio to feel like their second home and become a part of our extended family.

We have worked diligently in constantly redefining the fitness experience and are often referred to as the country club of fitness studios. We maintain a strict trainer to client atmosphere to preserve the intimacy of a client’s experience with us, so no open gym, no waiting for a machine or dealing with dirty equipment – it’s truly all about them when they are here. We want them to enjoy the one hour in their day that they dedicate to themselves. In addition, we don’t accept just any trainers, we have chosen to set our standards extremely high and keep our team small, highly educated and experienced, who are extremely approachable (you won’t find any meatheads here), and life-long career-focused trainers with the same family-driven vibe that we strive for.

Our studio space is unrivaled, from the moment you arive you can see the difference, the structure of the building and it’s surroundings stand out in itself, when you walk in the first thing clients comment on is how meticulous it is. It has a light-filled open floor plan, high ceilings with exposed beams, coastal inspired ambiance, large glass retractable bay doors and an expansive back deck to blend an indoor and outdoor experience to extend the beauty of the direct access we have to the Trinity River. Our showers and steam rooms are stocked with all of the luxe organic amenities a client could need or want in a fitness space to take them from their workout to conquer the rest of their day.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Building a lifelong relationship with our clientele is our most prized merit of success. We have an extremely high retention rate at our studio. This shows me that our clients are being pampered, they are satisfied with the quality service and the relationship they have with their trainer, and most importantly they are excited about the results they get and confidence they gain by continuing their training program. At the end of the day, our client’s success is our success.
