Today we’d like to introduce you to Adina Starke.
Adina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Clemson University in the Fall of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Communications, and since then I have worked in the Flexographic Printing industry. My major and work experience helped hone my skills and gave me a critical eye for detail and aesthetically pleasing artwork. While still working full time, I was able to establish my first business in 2009, Enchantment Designs for photography & graphic design services.
Enchantment Designs was based in Charlotte, NC for eight years and in the Fall of 2017, I got married and moved to Dallas, TX.
In August 2019 I had the pleasure of opening my own photography studio, Enchantment Studios, in the fair park area of Dallas. The studio is available for rent and retail space for photographers and other business owners.
I have sensitive skin and wanted to use natural, skin-safe, and of course, great smelling products. My passion for making natural handmade bath products took off following my wedding in the fall of 2017. As a wedding gift, my cousin made hugely popular soap favors that were attractive and soothing for the skin. The soaps received rave reviews because of their quality, appearance, and smell, so I decided to share this great product with everyone. In November 2017, Enchantment Essentials was established.
Over the next year, my cousin taught me the fundamentals of soap making which gave me the foundation to develop my own style and I expanded beyond soaps to include bath bombs, sugar scrubs, lotion bars and whipped body butters.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business is challenging because there is no clear path to success. For service and product-based businesses, success takes time because you must build a good reputation to grow your clientele. Word of mouth is a key factor and when you are new to a city and not a lot of people know you, networking is fundamental to gaining new business. I’ve faced this challenge in the time that I have been in Dallas, but I have combatted it by joining business associations and community groups, and I participate in activities that bring awareness to my brands. I am appreciative of the connections I have made along the way.
Properly managing time is also a challenge when having multiple businesses. I wear many hats for each business and sometimes feel that there isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish all that I would like to. Staying organized and prioritizing is key to making it work.
Tell us more about your work.
Enchantment Designs is a freelance photography and graphic designing business and I specialize in weddings, portraits, lifestyle photography and commercial graphics. I am proud to not only capture moments in time but evoke emotions my clients will cherish for a lifetime. I believe that I set myself apart from others because I treat the client the way I would want to be treated. Service is very important when working with people and my attention to detail, patience, and commitment to quality speaks for itself.
Enchantment Essentials is a handmade bath and body business. The products that I make and sell include soaps, bath bombs, sugar scrubs, whipped body butters, and lotion bars. I use vegan, cruelty-free, skin-safe oils and I am known for products that appeals to the senses. The smell, appearance, and feel of my products are what keeps clients coming back for more. I love being able to create a finished product that stimulates the senses and also provides beneficial properties.
I am proud to open the doors of Enchantment Studios, which is a venue that benefits both Enchantment Designs and Enchantment Essentials, as well as other DFW business owners. Being both a photography studio and retail space allows for my businesses to have a home and allows me to provide a space to rent to other business owners.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the photography industry, technology is advancing so fast that trends have gone to people utilizing cell phones instead of hiring professionals. I feel that special events, such as weddings will warrant for a professional photographer and this will maintain for years to come.
In the bath & body industry, people are seeing the benefits of natural products that have little to no chemicals and skin-loving properties. I believe that this will become the norm for big commercial companies that provide items in bulk and handmade businesses will continue to grow and flourish into a mainstream commodity.
