Meet Andy Don Emmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Don Emmons.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Andy Don . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Next year will mark thirty years exhibiting and making art. I took a drawing class as an art elective at Sam Houston State University while studying Criminal Justice. I switched to an art major and studied sculpture. After college, I worked and was caretaker of the legendary Texas folk artist Rev. Johnnie S. Swearigen. I then moved briefly to Dallas then Waxahachie where I maintained a studio and started making Art Cars. I was known for driving a Ford pickup covered in toys and dime store trinkets. In 1999, I covered a Cadillac in thousands of colored rhinestones I bought at a going out of business sale at an old craft store, it was exhibited at the Bob Bullock Texas State historical Musem in Austin for the grand opening in 2000. My work mostly consists of drawings, paintings and lately I’ve been working bending wire into three-dimensional drawings. I also collect contemporary and Outsider art. I also occasionally curate exhibits.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a wild ride of highs and lows. I learned that the work is what matters. Time in the studio is the most valuable thing an artist has. With the internet today it is a lot easier for artists to promote and have more power over their career than when I started back in the early 1990s.

Andy Don Emmons – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I guess I’m pretty prolific and my style varies. I am lucky enough to have been able to work in many different mediums over the years… I’m proudest of my public sculptures that have been commissioned to make and to be able to curate exhibits to expose other artists to the public. I’ve been very lucky. Luck and hard work is essential for artists!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is being able to have time in the studio and to attempt to make original work!! Work! Work! Work!
