Meet Bianke Prozesky of Birthing B Doula Services in Princeton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianke Prozesky.

Bianke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My first birth was an amazing learning curve and of course, like many moms feel, I am thankful everything went smoothly and my baby came out healthy via vaginal delivery. This was the first time, however, that I’ve ever felt so scared and so out of control that after six hours of labor (making it to 6cm), I “caved” for an epidural.

An epidural can be a beautiful thing especially if it’s part of your birth plan; for me, it was an absolute last resort and because I wasn’t adequately prepared and didn’t have the proper support for a natural birth I was left feeling as though I let myself down. “Healthy mom, healthy baby” is the minimum expectation- to think back on your birth with pride and a sense of accomplishment… Now that’s something! A good friend of mine had just gotten certified as a doula and so I was slowly sucked into the birth community in the best way possible! I’d listen to her stories about the births she’d attended and the difference she made in those women’s lives and thought to myself, “this is the one thing I feel truly passionate about one thing that will always keep me excited for my “work”.

And so began my journey of immersing myself in literature around birth; videos, podcasts, blogs… Anything I could get my hands on. After having my second baby (most amazing, fierce, empowering natural birth) a lightbulb went off to finally take the plunge and get myself certified through an amazing training organization called BEST.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh boy, is anything ever smooth?! I must say this: my husband, best friend and family have been amazingly supportive since I told them my plan. In short, I decided to quit a pretty secure job that I was at for years; a comfortable, promising future but that had zero passion for.

I came up with a very short-term financial plan to ease my husband’s mind about our immediate future expenses and, well, resigned. I needed something that would mean more time at home with my two small boys and that brought joy to my soul -this was it.

The first few months were difficult as I was not only figuring life out with two kids instead of one but nursing what felt like around the clock and constantly worried about money. Although I knew that this was the right decision, I was afraid that I’d given up a job of five years that I was good at just to fulfill my own desires.

I’m so glad I hustled through it and ignored my self-doubt because it makes me that much more proud when I’m sitting with a client talking through her birth plan knowing it hasn’t been a smooth road to get where I am. It took a lot of patience, persistent marketing and networking… As any doula will tell you, it’s a constant labor of love getting out there for interviews with expecting families hoping that you make that special connection!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I provide support prenatally, during birth and postpartum. In addition to my doula packages, I also provide basic lactation support to breastfeeding women. I pride myself on being a coach and motivator to first-time moms especially. Those mammas who don’t realize their own strength to overcome their fear of childbirth. I’m an advocate of informed consent; no one should ever feel like something is being done “to” them without being fully aware of their options. This is the biggest day of their lives and they should feel like they’re in the driver’s seat every step of the way!

I’m most proud about Birthing B because I’ve been there. I’ve been where so many women are now and with that experience, I bring my heart to my work. I’m a tad crunchy (learning something new every day!) and like to take a more holistic approach to things which is something that sets me apart… I’m also an immigrant from South Africa and feel a duty to support and advocate for women of color as racial disparities in birth regardless of background or economic status is just soul-crushing.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is where it’s AT! We are an extremely birthy community, in my opinion, and there are a ton of doulas and birth workers out there to support women per capita. Some think of it as “the market bring saturated” but I see it as that much more support for women when they need us.

To anyone starting out I’d give the same advice that was given to me: network, network, network. You have to get your name out there and do the grind. Clients will come at the right time, and you will be amazing. If this is truly what your heart desires know that it will not be easy but it will be the most rewarding thing you’ve ever done!
