Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Carmichael.
Brittney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in hairdresser’s home and once my mom said “No!” to coloring my hair black at age 12, I KNEW it was my turn behind the chair. I’ve technically been doing my own hair since I was 3 years old. I remember a story my mom tells of me holding a pair of scissors up to my bangs and I looked her dead in the eye as she yet again yelled “No!”.
Obviously telling a rebel spirit “no” means absolutely YES in our minds. So, I cut ’em. The bangs were off and that incident sparked my dream of one day being a hairdresser like my mom (but cooler.)
Being the rebel I am, I ditched my 4.8 high school GPA and the whole college thing to follow my passion of creating beautiful hair. Determination and 3 retail jobs got me through beauty school.
Today, I’ve been working behind the chair for a decade in my salon suite OMGhairstyles. The room may be small, but the experience is unforgettable. After years of listening to women express how they think and feel about themselves, I’ve learned that beauty begins within and confidence is a choice. It’s not so much about the highlights, although they definitely help! 😉
My lil’ luxury vegan salon suite is located in the heart of Frisco, Texas. OMGhairstyles caters to women only and offers a space for you to SHINE!
I never really knew the power that came with being a hairdresser. When women open up and share their heart and life with you, it has the power to create miraculous change. I use my position to inspire women to follow their hearts, do what they love, and most importantly – love themselves.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any road leading to your wildest dreams is never going to be a smooth road. If the road were smooth, you wouldn’t learn anything. On my wild ride, I’ve learned loads of wisdom from working behind the chair that range from how to react when a client takes off her top to what to do when someone’s hair catches on fire (that was an interesting one!) to how to really listen to what a woman is trying to tell you.
I’ve paid my way through school. I’ve followed my heart despite others doubting my dreams. I’ve learned how to put others first and actually be of service to them. I’ve learned to say “no”. I’ve learned the entrepreneur HUSTLE. I’ve learned that no matter how hard some days are, there’s nothing better than knowing you gave your best in each and every moment doing what you LOVE.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A few years ago, I would have told you that being featured on Good Morning Texas (twice) and published in #1 professional hairstylist magazine, Behind The Chair (twice), would make for some of my proudest moments.
Today, my proudest moments are when I spin the chair around and see JOY light up in my client’s eyes. I could just CRY when I see my client noticing her inner beauty for the first time. #proudmama
I reflect on how much OMGhairstyles as a business has grown in the last decade and how I’ve subsequently evolved because of it.
I also light up when a client comes back to my chair and shares with me how she said YES to following her heart or leaves the job that was holding her back or when I’m the first to find out she’s pregnant or getting married.
The shared connection I feel with each and every soul that sits in my chair makes for a proud moment.
