Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Chavez.
Gaby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began lashing in 2012, and it quickly became my main passion in life. As the years passed, I noticed that many people were confused about the laws regarding doing lashes in the state of Texas. Many girls had paid to get a certification, but certification is not valid unless you are already licensed. Many people were getting their lashes done by an unlicensed artist, and I felt like it was giving the lash industry, as a whole, a bad image. I made the conscious decision to open a school so that I could educate people the correct, sanitary way lashes should be applied so they could get their license, and make the lash industry present itself correctly. After I opened the school, I had many students come and tell me that at other schools, the instructor was only available one day out of the week, and the instructor would pick and choose who they gave their time to. It hurt to hear that students went through that, so I again made the conscious decision to make myself completely available, I am at the school Tuesday through Saturday from open until close, and I’m available to every single student enrolled in my school. I have an open door policy, in which I allow my students to come to me anytime they need help even if it’s after graduation. I opened the school in October of 2017, and since then, I have had a large number of students that have graduated and the majority of those students are licensed. The few that aren’t made it their personal preference not to test right away, but they do have two years to test before the hours expire. I currently have 22 students enrolled as of March this year, and will continue to enroll more throughout the year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was the hardest, most untraveled, off-track road I’ve ever been on and will continue to be challenging. The funny thing about being an instructor is that you will always be a student. I continue to gain knowledge on a daily basis, and try my best to include some of the knowledge I gain to the students so that they don’t have to go through as many failures or dead-end traps that would deter them from continuing their entrepreneurship. I also have sacrificed a lot of family time, but I have been lucky to have a family that is understanding and supportive.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Learn. Lash. Repeat Training Academy is located in Dallas off of Highway 67 and Hampton Rd. We are a specialty eyelash extension cosmetology training school with a mission to successfully prepare its graduates for the state license exam and to gain employment at a professional salon if that’s what they choose. The course offered by our school will allow students to develop the skills needed for their field of study and to become successfully employed. I am proud of each person that has taken the first step in becoming an entrepreneur and leaving corporate America. What makes me different is that I am fully committed to the students at my school, I am available to the students during, and after school, and will continue to be as long as they need me. If God permits, my future endeavors in this teaching industry are to expand to Ellis and/or Tarrant County.
What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was always trying to help others. I guess you could say, it’s always been in me to want to be in service to others. I was somewhat shy as a child, but I made friends easily, and in my teenage years, my personality started to grow with me. I knew as a child that I wanted to do something important. It may seem trivial to some people that lashing, or teaching how to lash is important to me, but remember, it’s something that makes someone feel beautiful, and teaching the correct method makes sure that everything done is safe and sanitary.
