Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Withrow.
Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started taking photographs when I was 15. My dad had a camera that he used to document my brother and I when we played school sports. I always had some interest in the arts but never knew how I wanted to express myself. I had danced for years but that didn’t feel like my purest form. Then I started paying attention to the way they filmed movies and I wanted to create that. So, I borrowed my dad’s camera and it stuck from there. I then traveled around the country, exploring places and seeing what I could. I had spent some time living in NYC, and traveling to LA but Texas has always been home. Now I’m based in and around all of Texas. I split my time mostly between Dallas and Austin, but travel nationally for work.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. I had my personal self-doubt deter my advancements more times than I could count. I’ve been distracted, I’ve let other influences enter my life. I’ve let closed doors get me down. But through all that, I learned I was letting my thoughts get in my way of fully releasing and creating my art and my path to create it.
Lauren Withrow – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in forms of portraiture and documentation of interpersonal stories of friends and my life. I do shoot fashion and commercial work as well. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, even though I hope to push my boundaries and comfort zone even further out and produce work that can have further reach. Everyone has their own story to tell, and everyone is different in that way.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I feel like it’ll continue to become more social media driven, but I do hope to see better representation and sustainability within brands and companies. Let’s move to better serve our community and the environment!
