Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Barrett.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The journey began as a 4th Generation Texan, born at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, the Great Granddaughter of a Sharecropper. In high school, I fell in love with Acting, and I won the first pageant I entered, Miss Texas Teen. That was the beginning of a successful Pageant career.
After graduating High School, I received the Greer Garson Scholarship for Acting (named and funded by the legendary Actress, Greer Garson) to the College of Santa Fe. While there, I was 1st Runner Up- Miss Sante Fe.
Becoming a writer for a local newspaper, in Dallas, brought me into the world of Politics, which led to positions as Media Consultant and Campaign Coordinator for City Council and Mayoral Candidates. With that knowledge and experience, I developed a platform as a Voice and Advocate for issues of social importance.
‘The Nicole Barrett Show,’ a fresh, bold, and entertaining radio show, in #5 market Dallas/Ft. Worth premiered in 2012 on 570am KLIF, owned by Cumulus Media. The show focuses on hot topics, politics, and health issues; plus a weekly segment ‘Interview with an Icon,’ featuring Legendary Stars of Music and Film, and Historical figures.
In 2014,’The Nicole Barrett Show’ made its television debut on KTXD-TV in Dallas/Ft. Worth! Icons who have appeared on the radio or television show include: Gretchen Carlson, Lily Tomlin, Newt Gingrich, Rich Little, Gospel Legend BeBe Winans, Patty Duke, Louis Gossett Jr., Tippi Hedren, Gloria Gaynor, Jesse Jackson, Shirley Jones, Toni Tenille (‘The Captain and Tenille’), The Temptations, and more!
In 2016, I sat front row at a Press Conference for then-Republican Nominee, now U.S President, Donald Trump. I asked the question heard around the world: “Mr. Trump, how do you feel about the recent endorsement from (former KKK Grand Wizard) David Duke?”
Mr. Trump replied, “I Disavow it.” That question was repeated on CNN and would top the election news cycle until Election Day. David Duke appeared on ‘The Nicole Barrett Show’ to high ratings, and I was interviewed by Fox News-Dallas/Ft. Worth and The Dallas Morning News to give insight into the experience and result.
A supporter of various charities, I have been honored to be chosen as one of Modern Luxury Magazine’s 2013 Fresh Faces of Fashion, Miss Texas Organization Woman of Distinction, and a nominee for LLS (Leukemia Lymphoma Society) Woman of the Year. I have Chaired Luncheons and Gala’s featuring Debbie Reynolds, Shirley Jones, and Kinky Friedman.
I made a professional and personal shift when I decided to use my platform to advocate for causes that I considered important and were affecting the social climate. One cause I took on was to advocate for the Bill Cosby, sexual assault victims.
I am currently developing a Docu-Series with several of the Bill Cosby Survivors, and a made for T.V movie based on my story as a target of Adult Bullying.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been a Target of Adult Bullying, and combined with my struggles with Depression; the emotional burden could have ruined me professionally. But, the Blessing was the experience gave me a new focus: Advocate.
I am deeply affected by Women’s rights issues, Domestic Violence and Abuse, and Harassment. My experiences inspired me to link arms in solidarity with other victims, of any injustice, and refuse to be silenced. It all prepared me to be a Survivor, and to Advocate for those without a Voice.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Nicole Barrett Show – what should we know?
The Nicole Barrett Show is the HOTTEST Show in Radio! It really is! My approach to commentary, features hard facts, a little laughter, and some good old-fashioned, ‘Real Talk.’ I was one of the first radio Hosts to mention Trayvon Martin’s murder before it became the #1 story in the World. The segment, “Interview with an Icon’ has brought back a lot of great memories for listeners who have wondered, “Whatever happened to..” OR, “I didn’t know she was still alive!”
My show is extremely diverse, and my listeners really have no idea what I am ‘going to say about any issue..’ I wanted the Nicole Barrett Show to be a true Open Forum for listeners to SPEAK THEIR MIND. When I interviewed David Duke 3 times, many people condemned me for giving him a platform. I feel it is important to try and understand how and why people think the way they do.
I spent a day filming Life on Skid Row, and with a Homeless woman as my Guide, I was able to put a face on the life of the homeless in America. Due to my unapologetic Advocacy for varies issues, I have been called on by listeners to Advocate for them in situations where they feel their power is limited. It gave me a new slogan, “When they come for You, You come to The Nicole Barrett Show!”
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Thankfully, I had my mother and my nana to give me my inner voice, and my family has eagerly supported all of my shenanigans! Through the years, I have been fortunate to be mentored by top Local Broadcasters, I studied acting and was privately coached by one of the greatest actresses, Broadway Legend, Betty Buckley.
