Meet Sandy Aziz of In the (k)now

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Aziz.

Sandy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always tried to do what I was “supposed to do” in terms of checking certain boxes – good school, follow the rules, life, liberty, the pursuit of integrity. I wanted these things for myself – to be a better version of myself daily. However, what I failed to see was that by boxing myself in these boxes that I was trying to check off – I was limiting myself. I was limiting myself in my career, in my hobbies, and in the pursuit of adventures.

It was in 2011 when I was in my first year of law school when my dad and I were in a car accident that I renovated my thinking about life. The reality is that we are all just making up this journey as we go.

In a life where things are uncertain and unpredictable, there is a level of comfort in knowing that no one has it completely figured out. This was how the idea behind my podcast, ” In the (k)now “. In fact, I remember talking to one of my best friends and explaining that we are all a little lost (there is a lot we don’t know) and that is completely fine because there is beauty in that. In fact, I believe you find out most about yourself in times where you feel most uncomfortable or “lost”. And I remember her asking me: so what you are saying is that we should focus on the present? Be in the now rather than try to know everything about the future? And the title ” In the (k)now ” was born. If you listen to an episode, you will note I say “Welcome to in the know, in the now” and that is why the “k” is (k).

So, today – by trade, I am a qualified Texas lawyer. By life, I am an adventurer, fashionista, podcaster, content director, writer, and who knows what is next!

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth – and I think when you are going through the rigid parts – it feels like the world is tumbling down around you.

My struggles along the way have been obstacles in my career that have seemingly appeared as a result of me not taking a straight and conventional legal path. I take three steps forward and find that something has prevented me from actually progressing and it feels like I take three steps back. Those struggles included: VISA issues, people not understanding or utilizing my correct qualifications, and a whole host of others. While everyone deals with struggles to some extent, mine weren’t just affecting my legal career, but also my prospects, hobbies, personal and social life. I didn’t feel as though I could even start my podcast because I was not in a position in my life where I had any sort of stability.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My podcast, as mentioned, is called “In the (k)now”. It is about anything & everything – the knowns & the unknowns. What sets my podcast apart from others is that I didn’t limit the topic because who wants to listen to the exact same thing every single week when we have new and exciting things to say and experience every single day? And, given my background and experiences – law, fashion, art, writing, content creation – I come up with my topics and carefully select my guests to make sure we cover a range of topics and that they are genuine, raw, and real!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I went to high school in Dallas and lived there for most of my adolescent years – and I think it is becoming a better city for things like podcasts and arts and culture. Admittedly, I didn’t used to think that at all because it felt like a lot of the same – people would mimic each other in every aspect – clothes, attitudes, music, opinions etc. It seemed like it was a carbon-copy culture.

However, over the last 5 this has really changed! Dallas has developed (or re-branded) its art district, culture, and diversity through different ways. My sister, Sylvia, tells me about all the cool events she is going to and pop-ups in Dallas and it really has become so unique and lively! So, yes, if you are in anything art-related, I would recommend Dallas as a creative hub.
