Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Walker-Wilson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tyler. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In high school, I was always interested in music and finding new artists to listen to and put my peers on to. My senior year in high school, I and my group of friends (TLB) used to throw and promote parties around Dallas and Desoto for my big bros Elz the DJ & TB Quis.
While this was fun and we made a little bread, I wanted to be more involved with the event instead of just promoting and I wanted to make more money consistently. Elz was the guy throwing the party and one of the DJs and I thought it was dope and I enjoyed witnessing the art of DJ’ing and I could tell they got a rush from making a room of 800-1200 people jump dance or rap a song based off their skills. Me being the hard working and the determined person my mom raised me I knew it was something I had to learn and I knew over time I could master. I also didn’t want to work in the cafeteria in college or anything like that, so I knew DJ’ing would get the job done.
Has it been a smooth road?
I feel like the hardest part about starting anything new is just getting started and being serious. Once you do that and practice, people will be able to tell and will be willing to do business if they see you’re serious.
Also, making moves to make sure you stay relevant for a long time in the music/entertainment industry is tough. You have to always think ahead of the curve and make sure your next move is your best move.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a DJ first and a producer 2nd. I also throw my own events and come up with all the marketing schemes and ideas myself. When I was really making my name, I was respected for my quality transitions and mixes both in a function and on SoundCloud. When I first started DJ’ing, my style was so cool and fresh to the ears that people naturally gravitated towards me at UNT and back home in Dallas. I wasn’t a super vocal guy to the public but I was never seen as a lame or shy so my cool personality along with my DJ’ing style is what really pushed me to the next level across the colleges throughout all of Texas.
I’ve DJ’d at pretty much every big university in Texas at least once! At the big events, not the small ones either.
I won DJ of the year three years in a row while at UNT.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
If you’re coming out of high school and headed to college and want to get into DJDallasallas is a perfect city to base yourself because of the many markets we have for DJ’ing. Also, if you go to college in Texas, there will definitely be Dallas people there who will appreciate a good DJ who represents their city.
Honestly, if we swapped the locations of SMU & UNT, Dallas would be way too turned because we would have a live college in the city. Every major city where music is prominent or a lot of artists come out of having colleges right in the heart of the city where the local music can be pushed and cultivated. Dallas doesn’t quite have that yet.
