Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawnta’ Mitchell.
Shawnta’, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a native of Little Rock, Arkansas. I moved to Dallas in 2014 to chase a bigger dream in the hair industry! Dallas has been nothing short of amazing I’ve excelled in my craft and gained a mentor (Rachel Mathews) who has shown me a lot these past four years. I continue to increase my knowledge and skill set by attending classes that allow me to say that I specialize in short hair.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has come with many ups and downs. It was hard to move to Dallas and let go of what I had known for so long. So, for two years, I went back and forth to Little Rock to continue to service my clients. I lost my brother to a home invasion in 2015. On top of dealing with a pre-teen who didn’t want to leave her friends and start over in a new city! So, to answer the question, it was a rough ride but God has kept me every step of the way. When I look back to where I started and to where I am now. I still feel like I made the right career choice even though it’s wasn’t picture perfect to start off.
Please tell us about Shawnta’ Mitchell hair @ Diva Styles Salon.
I specialize in short healthy hair. I’ve taken numerous cutting classes just to make sure that my work can be versatile. Meaning with or without your hair curled you will still have style! Working at Diva Styles Salon North Dallas has helped me add an extra flair to my work giving it a unique look that can be identified to the Salons name! I seek to servicewomen who are looking for a dependable, timely, and dedicated stylist. Great hair doesn’t just happen with one appointment this is a relationship that takes both parts to get maximum results of healthy hair.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My dad was in the military and that was what I always wanted to do. That was my dream to make rank and travel the world! My mom became a nail tech when we moved back to little after my dad finish his last tour in the Navy. That when my days of being in the salon started! I was not interested at all! I remember watching and an episode of Martin when Gina and Pam went and worked for Sheneneh at her hair salon. It made me think that the salon was just a plaything or a hangout spot! I’ve been a hairstylist for 16 years and it was only until about six years ago that I really felt like this craft is a true gift. I’m a counselor, financial advisor, teacher, listener, encourager, a friend, and at times the closest thing to the family some of my clients have. So, when I look back at the environment, I was in as a kid going to the salon with my mom I realize that those were all meaningful relationships where someone trusted her to service them, and out of all the choices they had. They chose her!
