Today we’d like to introduce you to Hiram Castro and Kari Castro.
Hiram and Kari, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In preparation of our son being born, we wanted to add a sliding barn door to what would become his nursery. After looking online and not finding exactly what we wanted at an affordable price, we decided to just make our own. We had minimal tools and supplies, but we found a great amount of satisfaction when the final product was hung up in our home. A few posts and ads on social media led to several requests for barn doors, including 11 reclaimed wood doors for a local wedding venue. We have since built and installed over 200 barn doors in the DFW area in homes and businesses alike. We are constantly getting new design requests from clients and have added several styles to our portfolio. We had no idea what a positive response we would get from what started as a small home project, but we are absolutely blessed to be on this journey.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After our son was born, managing our time and newfound responsibilities were challenging. As he has gotten a bit older, we have been able to let him “help” or at least keep us company during the process. He has his own toy tools and loves to fake drill and hammer scrap wood.
Please tell us about H&K Customs.
We specialize in custom barn doors at an affordable price with turnkey installation. We get several clients who will send us a photo of their dream door and we make it a reality for them. We are proud to be able to provide a piece of functional artwork to people’s homes and businesses. It’s a very rewarding process to see the smile and gratitude on people’s faces when they see the final product. We stand behind our work and do not collect any payment until the door is installed and meets the customer’s expectations.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think we would have started this process much sooner had we known how rewarding it would become. We also would have invested in better tools and equipment when building our first door, but it still holds a special place in our hearts and home.
