Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Grimmett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My blogging journey started about ten years ago. At the time I was doing custom knit and crochet accessories and selling them at craft shows. I was even the president of a company that produced craft shows. Of course, I didn’t just write about knitting and crocheting. I also included tidbits and stories about my family. Over time I realized that I loved blogging more than I loved the craft shows. Eventually, I rebranded my blog to Julie Measures. The name reflects the main topics I blog about: food, crafts, and travel. You measure ingredients when you bake, you measure your projects when you craft, and you can measure your miles when you travel. Those are the yardsticks I like to use when I measure my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think being an entrepreneur always includes ups and downs. When I rebranded my blog, I was also finishing up my bachelor’s degree, had a pre-school aged son at home, a son in middle school, and another son with special needs that I was homeschooling. Now two of my kids are in school during the day, but I am still homeschooling one of my high school-aged sons.
It’s hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers, but I really try to focus on my own growth. It’s important to set goals for yourself and then take steps to achieve those goals. I’ve realized that accomplishing those goals brings me the greatest joy.
Please tell us about Julie Measures.
Julie Measures is a do-it-yourself lifestyle blog that offers easy solutions for everyday living. I think that sometimes we make crafts, recipes, entertaining, and travel much more complicated than it needs to be. I love sharing crafts and recipes that are short on supplies but big on impact. Serve a simple dessert that tastes amazing. Create a simple craft that looks spectacular. Feel empowered to take a trip to a new location. I want everyone to feel like they can recreate whatever they see on my website.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think blogging gives women a unique opportunity to tell a wide range of stories. We aren’t all alike, and it’s wonderful to see so much diversity within our community. Blogging, and being an entrepreneur, has given me the chance to meet many women who are forging their own paths. I have met some amazing women bloggers who support each other, mentor each other and celebrate each other’s successes. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own, you can have a great tribe of women supporting you.
