Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Urban.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for the art of decorating, even as a child. I’ve also always dreamed of owning my own business. When I was 18-year old, I moved to Dallas to pursue my dreams. I modeled for the first couple of years, and on the side, I would help redecorate close friends homes. In 2012 I got pregnant and had my first son.
In 2013, I started a desk job as a paralegal at a law firm. I’ve never been a desk person, and I won’t say I hated my job, but I did not LOVE it. One thing my father always taught me was to ” Do what you LOVE!”
In 2017, I had my second son. As a single mother of two boys, I’ve had my fair share of challenges and decided to pursue what I love and start my own business in Interior Design. I want to teach my boys to follow the advice of their grandfather, and the actions of their mother, to pursue their dreams and always do what they love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road to success is never a smooth road. Getting yourself out there and known can be a struggle within itself. The most challenging for me is the fact that I did not go to school. It is a natural gift for me.
I am self-taught when it comes to using the virtual software; at times it was very difficult. I took some classes on the programs and also read a lot to learn how to use the program.
Another challenge is the field is very competitive, with many interior designers and design firms, you really have to make a name for yourself to set yourself apart from the others designers.
I’ll be honest, there have been many times where I have doubted myself and wanted to give up. I mean I’m only human, but my boys are my motivation, and they remind me to never give up.
Starting your own business has many challenges, but the important thing is to never quit and keep trying. You will always hit roadblocks, but that’s when you find a different path to meet your goals.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Urban Interior Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an Interior Designer of residential and commercial spaces, I also do staging and events as well. I strive to design a unique interior that will have a positive and energetic impact on my client’s environment. I offer a balance of creativity, collaboration and forward thinking with a structured, organized and detailed mentality.
I think I am best known for the flair I add to my client’s environment. I can make any space fitting, not only to their personality but also to their budget. Being able to take my client’s vision and turn it into reality, and seeing the joy and happiness after space is complete is what makes me most proud of my company. That’s what makes everything worth it.
I believe what sets me apart from other designers is that I did not go to school for design, but I knew I had a gift at a young age. As soon as I walk into a room I simply have an eye for color palettes, furniture, you name it. I can see a room and revision it into something remarkable.
I also believe what sets me apart from other designers is that I’m not in this for the money. I am in this because I truly have a passion for decorating, a love for beautiful furniture, decor’, and art. A desire to have all surroundings be on another level.
I can truly appreciate the value of a well-decorated home. I feel every opportunity I have been given to decorate has been a blessing in the ability to bring others, the same feeling that I have in my own home.
I fully understand where the saying comes from when you do what you love you’re not working. My passion for Interior Design has been like a magnet to people in my life, especially artist and creative’s; it’s another confirmation that I am doing what I’m meant to be doing.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say I’ve had good or bad luck. But I am definitely blessed. God has blessed me with a beautiful family, a home, a business, and my friends. Yes, I have had to endure many tribulations throughout my life, but for every one of those difficult challenges/experiences, there was a blessing of some kind within it.
