Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Ray.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Katherine Ray Art the same way I decided my college major and my elective classes in high school. I knew I loved to make art, so let’s takes a couple art classes in high school, apply to Studio Art in college, maybe try to sell some work post-college, and see what happens. Well, without making those choices, I would have never gotten to where I am today. I also wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and encouragement from everyone in my life, and I am truly grateful. It takes a village to support an artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It sure has been a rocky road. Pursuing art as a career is extremely challenging, and you are constantly being pushed beyond your limits. Unlike the careers of my fellow classmates and friends, there is no stability. Every day is different and comes with a new set of challenges. The income is very inconsistent, and you have to get creative with finding different streams of income. You are your own boss, and no one is telling you to show up to work, so you have to hold yourself accountable. There are also no guidelines, no rules, no book to tell you how to do it, nothing. You just have to jump. Yet, these struggles are absolutely worth it and I don’t regret trying, because I haven’t quit and I’ve come so far in the past year and a half.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am the sole owner of Katherine Ray Art. I specialize in 2D art, which includes works on canvas or paper. But what sets me apart is my scope with what I create is endless. I create many different artworks from large abstract paintings on canvas to a small, realistic watercolor of buildings, to small abstract charcoal drawings of space and energy, to very specific commissions, to just about anything you can think of. I also experiment with my art, where I continue to expand my scope with my own direction. My influences come from my Fine Art Education and Studio Art training at the University of Texas in Austin, as well as my personal experiences of being a self-taught artist and the interactions with local artists in Dallas and elsewhere.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start over, I would take the days that I was the least encouraged and inspired to make art, and just make art. There has been many days and weeks where I sold little to no art, or could not find inspiration, and I wish I could do over those days and just create.
