Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Byrom.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a love for coffee for as long as I could remember. It was something my dad, and I always bonded on. Every time I’m at my parent’s house, my dad puts on a pot of coffee. We usually just sit right there at the island of the kitchen drinking our coffee either talking about life or talking about coffee. Something that was brought up several time in the moments of us sitting there was my dad saying how he would love to start roasting coffee. I would agree and get super pumped about it, but at those moments it was just conversation and dreaming.
One day at my job, I was talking to God about my current situation and coffee just kept coming to my mind. Its been months since coffee was even a conversation so it was super random and I had such a good feeling about it. I had sent a text to my dad at my break and said: “I think we need to start roasting coffee.” So I just jumped into it and haven’t looked back since
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m a mom with a full-time job, so I would have to say my biggest struggle is time, Roasting is an art and you have to be fully attentive during the duration of the full roast.
Our original roast is roasted in a unique way that requires more time than a typical roast. I feel I don’t fit the term single mom because I am surrounded by more love than I have ever been, but putting work into my passion and business without my daughter feeling one ounce of time taken away from her has been a bit of a challenge.
Especially right now we are roasting out of a small roaster and filling orders as the company is growing. It’s definitely a lot of early mornings and weekends to get it done. Saving up for a large roaster as the company grows is our goal right now.
We are still at the start of our business venture, and all the bumps and struggles don’t really worry me so much because I still have that good feeling since the first day it was put into my mind. Plus, smooth roads are boring. How can your testimony inspire others if you tell them everything was easy.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We want to roast quality coffee without over complicating it. Today I feel coffee is more and more complicated to order. I feel all the label of the origins and notes of the coffee are overwhelming for customers that are just looking for a good cup of coffee. We let our customer tell us what they want in a cup of coffee, and we use our knowledge about coffee to provide that good cup of quality coffee.
Our first roast was inspired by a special friend, who loved coffee but had a hard time enjoying it because it would upset her stomach. My goal was to find a bean and search a roasting technique that would provide a less acidic cup of coffee. It ended up being a big hit and is now our first roast. We are working on new labeling and experimenting with other roasts to add to Elm Fork Coffee. Each roast will be dedicated to the everyday people in our lives who inspire us.
What were you like growing up?
I remember as a kid loving everything outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping with my family. I was a bit of a tomboy. I was kind of quiet and very observant to my surroundings.
I remember always daydreaming a lot about doing something cool like traveling the world and becoming an actress or some kind of musician. I never did pick up an instrument and learn how to play, but I have been blessed enough to do a bit of traveling.
