Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystalyn Fitzgerald.
Crystalyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to the DFW area a little over ten years ago from a small town in Arkansas. The first year I lived here I worked a full-time job and two part-time jobs. I quickly realized I couldn’t live like this long-term and needed to take a step towards figuring out my career. The big question was college or trade school.
After some serious thought, I decided trade school was the better option for me. I had an interest in cosmetology school because it was something that I could be creative in and still help people. I interviewed with several well-known cosmetology schools, and I landed at The Salon Professional Academy.
While in school there I applied for a part-time front desk receptionist job at a commission salon. Once I finished school, I began an apprenticeship program with two of their top stylists. After six months of training, I began working as a stylist on my own.
After four years of building my clientele, I decided I needed a change. I needed something different, but I wasn’t ready to walk away from being behind the chair. So I rented a booth from a small locally owned salon. I’ve been at The Colour Bar for five years.
Since being an independent stylist, I have been able to do so much. I’ve traveled, built my first home, and got married! And through a lot of hard work, my wife and I were recently able to purchase The Colour Bar Salon. Now we are able to live out our dreams and help other independent stylists live out theirs.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I do my best to stay organized and patient when it comes to running both of my businesses.
Please tell us about The Colour Bar Salon.
I am the owner and a stylist at The Colour Bar Salon. I specialize in color, cutting, and extensions. I’m known for my ‘lived’ in hair color and haircuts, balayage techniques, and gray coverage.
I feel like my education sets me apart from others. I love taking classes to improve my career.
I’m the most proud of owning a salon that gives independent stylists the opportunity to live out their dreams of being self-employed stylists.
