Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven Camacho.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve wanted to do hair since the first time I stepped into a salon. I remember going to some of the hottest salons in Houston with my mom to get her hair cut, in the 80’s, and just being enamored by the magic being created & energy buzzing all around me. (not to mention the hair was kind of amazing).
The moment I graduated high school, I enrolled into cosmetology, started working in a tiny town of a couple thousand people, that I quickly grew out of, moved back to Houston for a few years, and now in Austin where I just opened my own salon, two years ago, so my focus has shifted on growing, developing & nurturing my team. It’s been a crazy passion-packed almost two decades, but I feel I’ve just begun a new journey & excited to see where I can take it.
Please tell us about your art.
I always have a new goal. What I did six months ago, is not what I’m doing today, and won’t be what I’m doing six months from now. Once I began my career as a hairstylist, I feel like I’ve sort of been on a mission to elevate not just every year, but every single day. Each & every haircut, color or style I create, I always try to make it better the next time, reevaluating my work as I go along. I love to collaborate with my clients on a new look & bring out the very best versions of themselves, whether it embracing their natural texture, changing textures or giving them the color/cut/style, they’ve always dreamed of.
I would say for the moment, I’m loving transformations but simplistic ones, like, what a good cut can do for your face shape and texture. Teaching clients how to actually embrace their hair instead of fighting it. That’s what’s filling my cup at the moment.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success is defined differently for everyone. But I think we have the chance to be successful every day, creating work that inspires yourself & others. As long as you are happy and fullfilled as a creative, I think that’s success. Working in a field that’s constantly evolving, we as creatives have to also evolve. Success requires us to have GRIT. Passion + Perseverance. Which I’ve always had a lot of, so I feel lucky to have found a career that keeps me gritty.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see most of my work all over Texas, I’ve got clients from Dallas, Houston and in between. Other than that, you can probably find me on Instagram or stop by the salon anytime! Super excited to dive more into the editorial world this year while entering national competitions every year, like NAHA (North American Hairstyling Awards) & Wella’s North American Trendvision Awards.
