Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin and Ryan Thurman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Honestly, starting a business was never in my plan. As a kid, I carried a disposable camera with me everywhere and would set up scenes with my beanie babies and take pictures. Eventually, I moved to an oh so fancy digital camera and real people. I took original photos of raindrops on roses and model shoots on railroad tracks, I really loved sharing what I saw with the world. When I was 17, I had the opportunity to work with a local photographer and loved being a second shooter and really thought that would be the end of that. When I was in college, people from my home town started to ask me to take their pictures (and paid me to do it). When I had to do my taxes, I realized a business had formed! I shot as many weddings as I could get throughout college and taught my best friend to shoot so that we could travel together. Fast forward a few years to when I met Ryan. He was a sports editor for a newspaper and in order to spend time together, I would travel with him to the games he covered and take pictures. He started to learn how to take photos with me and eventually tagged along to a wedding. He’s shot every wedding with me since and totally transformed how we take and edit the photos!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and running a small business is not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. Trying to stay ahead of the curve and stand out is one of the hardest parts of this job. We want to tell our client’s story in a unique and creative way while also not being so far out there that no one wants to book with us. We’re always working toward achieving that perfect balance.
Caitlin + Ryan Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Something that we really pride ourselves in is the way that we create our own light. We don’t depend on natural light to be perfect in every situation (because that’s pretty rare) and know how to manipulate the lights that we have to create images that balance natural and artificial light. We are inspired by films and are constantly trying to learn new ways to turn manipulate lights to get the most out of the subjects and locations we’re shooting.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, every time that a client loves their images, I’m so proud. I love seeing people’s faces light up when they see themselves or their story in a new light.
