Meet Jessica Brown of Red Cat and Co in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Brown.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had worked in retail sales and management before opening a pop-up shop with a friend through Open PopUp SA at Hemisphere Park. It was open for the maximum term of six months and at closing, I had already decided that I didn’t want to take on a typical brick and mortar. Instead, I put my energy into something that was closer to my heart and retrofitted an old, short school bus into a very tiny boutique. It carries an assortment of goods by local Texas makers as well as independent artists/makers throughout USA/Canada/world, more ethical companies like Baggu and just a fabulous assortment of fun brands

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a small business owner, you face struggles on a daily basis. Financial stressors, time limitations, sanity… there’s a plethora of struggles that business owners face. But I truly love what I do. The people I meet, the experiences… it’s an incredible feeling to wake up, open the bus, and actually, have people who show up to support what you’re doing. Who actually love what you’re doing. It’s the most amazing feeling

Red Cat and Co – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Red Cat and co-runs out of an old school bus affectionately known as the ‘the magic school bus. I opened her on October 7th of 2017 and wanted to introduce San Antonio to a whimsical assortment of independent artists/makers. The assortment has a strong focus towards Texas makers as well as other independent artists or more ethical companies. Everything is quirky, fun, colorful… things I love and want to share with everyone

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Opening the shop. Receiving recognition in best of the city categories during her first year of business by both San Antonio Magazine and Sa Current. Customers who become regulars and genuinely love the experience of shopping there. I think that’s, by far, my favorite… earning repeat customers who genuinely love the shop and I get the opportunity to build relationships with them. It really is the best feeling.
