Art & Life with Renee Pearl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Pearl.

Renee, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As far as I can remember, my father always had photography as a hobby of his. From sitting in front of the camera to learning about what different pieces of the equipment did, I became infatuated. After getting a camera of my own at 16, I started to explore the world of possibilities from behind the lens. I began taking pictures of anything from nature, architecture, and my younger sister (who never minded being a model). As I got older and practiced more, I started noticing how I’ve grown and started developing my skill more. Grateful for the improvement, it fueled my passion. I learned I loved capturing moments, forever frozen in time. Whether it was a laugh or a serious, concentrated emotion, I began to relish in my role as a photographer with a camera in my hand.

When I was in college, I began seeking outlets to practice my photography as a break from my science studies. I became a marketing manager for the fencing team at my university and loved taking action shots of the matches. In the dance organization, I was a part of, I enjoyed capturing the shapes of that my peers would make as they performed. And my younger sister was still the model in many of my pictures as I would go to her swim meets and take as many photos as I could of her successes. With the opportunity to go to a university right on the water (Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi), the nature around me helped develop a sense of what I aspire to be. My love for photography and my love for the environment melded together at this point. I wanted to become more dedicated to bringing about environmental awareness through the lens of a camera. Upon graduation with an Environmental Science degree and minors in biology and digital journalism, I vowed to want to make a difference as big as I could with the combination of my two passions.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I like to create a frozen point in time by capturing fleeting moments that is in my artwork. Often times, we as a society do not look into the detail that is presented in front of us every day. With my artwork, I hope people can take away the message of the moment. I hope those who view my art can take just an extra beat out of their day to simply understand with gratitude what we are given, and appreciate it.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My advice to other artists would be, continue honing your own skill. It’s easy to compare yourself to others and forget the years of hard work they had to push through to achieve all that they have accomplished. Use it as inspiration, rather than a point of jealousy and frustration.
