Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Su.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My first exposure to art was in the form of freehand drawing. I took lessons every week when I was in elementary school, but this form of art never really stuck with me. Fast-forward quite a few years to my senior year of college. I had been playing with the portrait mode feature on my iPhone during the summer and got hooked on creating images with artificial “bokeh.” It was a gateway into getting my first dedicated camera. Because of my engineering background, I enjoyed learning about the technical details of photography first but quickly started reading and studying more and more composition and creative aspects of photography, a side that I constantly struggle with. I started taking photos of everything and trying to find my style, likes & dislikes and just making my DSLR feel like an extension of my body. When I started taking photos of my friends during events that I started to realize how much I enjoyed capturing emotions and my love of the art really started taking off.
Please tell us about your art.
I enjoy creating landscape, portrait, event, and street photography. I purposely try to not get entrenched solely in one category but to be as well-rounded as possible of a photographer. I don’t follow a theme, but I tend to have moodier overtones to most of my photos, with the attempt to evoke some form of solitude or longing in each shot. As one of my favorite photographers Rick Sammon often says “the camera looks both ways. In picturing the subject, we’re also picturing a part of ourselves.”. I had been struggling with loneliness and a missing sense of community when I first started out my photography, and in retrospect, I think my images helped me cope and provided a form of expression.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
As a lonely artist, I love when other artist reaches out to me and say hello. Just emailing, Instagram messaging, or leaving a nice comment I think is a great way to start connecting.

I am on Instagram @esuphotography and @esuphotography.portraits. I also have a website esu.smugmug.com which contains a lot of my event photography work. Just visiting and sharing my Instagram or website would mean a lot to me! I love sharing my work and enjoy discussing my photos.
