Today we’d like to introduce you to Peyton Mabry.
Peyton, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Thousand Oaks, California but raised in Frisco, Texas. I consider my childhood a very blessed one. I was fortunate to be a part of Frisco transforming from a small city to what is now known as Sports City USA, home to seven professional sports teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Frisco RoughRiders, and many more. Frisco is now the ultimate destination for sports fans of all kinds.
I have always been drawn to a sports lifestyle. I am a former competitive athlete. My competitive cheerleading career began early at age five and ended at age 17. Through my twelve years at Cheer Athletics, I ultimately climbed my way to the most elite level and spent the last years of my career on Cheetahs, a worlds caliber team, winning NCA Nationals and going on to become a USASF World Champion. The incredible journey and success of my team led to a large social media following and, subsequently, opportunities to utilize my platform to empower individuals and brands within the digital sphere.
After my competitive career, I went on to cheer for Texas Christian University. Go Frogs! While continuing to build my platform, majoring in News and Media Studies in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at TCU, I sought media internships that would further develop my journalistic and on-camera skill sets. I am proud to say that along with the TCU Media team, we developed the first digital hosting and reporting position for all TCU Athletics social media platforms. I was the first digital media host for TCU, covering the football, basketball, and baseball programs; including traveling to and covering the Alamo Bowl and the College World Series.
Since graduating in May of 2018, I moved to Dallas where I am actively working in all facets of media. I do blogging contributions for organizations, podcast engagements, public speaking via panel discussions, and guest appearances on local radio/television networks. I specialize in hosting and digitally covering restaurant and hospitality openings and events, charity, fashion, entertainment, and sporting events throughout DFW. I am the social media manager for dear Hannah, a thriving local boutique with two locations in the DFW area. Additionally, I do some fashion and lifestyle blogging on the LiketoKnow.it platform. You can find me on the LIKEtoKnow.it app at @peyton_mabry. I also model with The Campbell Agency. I continue to share my journey through my social media platforms (@peyton_mabry), where I often partner with local and global brands as a story-teller and spokesperson in marketing campaigns which I work hard to keep authentic and organic to my lifestyle. If you see something on my feed, it’s because I genuinely value the product or service and use it in my everyday! I create content that helps generate buzz for brands that I truly believe have a positive impact within their space. All things sports and gameday remain my driving passion.
As you can see, I don’t fit into any box. I think they call that entrepreneurship or freelancing. Whichever, it’s how I roll.
Has it been a smooth road?
I honestly believe that if the path is completely smooth then you’re not pushing the limits enough. For me personally, my path as I knew it was altered drastically when I became a candidate for spinal fusion surgery as a result of idiopathic scoliosis. The news that my curvature had progressed to the point of needing surgery both ended my cheerleading career and set me on a new trajectory. Choosing to have the surgery when I did was the very best decision that I could have made for myself. It forced me out of my “uniform” and way out of my comfort zone. It was a very vulnerable transitional time for me, but two titanium rods and seventeen titanium screws later, I am beyond grateful to be on a path with less curve, in a body that is capable of doing anything that I want it to do. I underwent surgery at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in the summer of 2016, between my sophomore and junior year at TCU. My surgeon and current doctor to this day is Dr. Brandon Ramo. Over the years, he has become one of the most trusted and favorite people in my life. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children is one of the nations leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, sports injuries and fractures, as well as certain related arthritic and neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My advice to all women who are starting their journey is to seek opportunities that grow and challenge you and, most importantly, be open to ALL opportunities that present themselves, as you never know what they will lead to next. It’s good to have role models and equally as good to stay true to yourself and do it your way. The balance between the two is key. You will be told repeatedly that there is only one standardized way to climb the ladder. I wholeheartedly disagree.
The quieter you are about your efforts, the more surprised people will be on seeing the results, and the more they’re going to talk about you. Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I rely heavily on my real life mentors. I also source a lot of inspiration and insight through the accounts that I follow on social media. In terms of mainstream media, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford set an amazing example for young women in broadcast journalism. If I had a “dream job”, it would be something modeled after @klgandhoda but geared for millennials and incorporating sports… also incorporating philanthropic efforts at the core.
My current reads are #GIRLBOSS, Fiercehearted, and Rich Dad Poor Dad (a recommendation from my dad).
I love using Kayla Itsine’s SWEAT app for effective at-home workouts.
I find myself on the road more often lately, so podcasts are something I’m interested in learning more about.
