Meet Ashley J. of Postmodern Indigenous in Downtown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley J.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve done a lot of different sorts of creative work, & am currently putting a new focus into my own platform, “Postmodern Indigenous”, while continuing to work on pieces for regional & national magazines such as “Arts + Culture TX”, “Temporary Art Review”, & “1530 Main”.

As a freelance writer, I concentrate mostly on the arts, producing writing that’s more commentary than critique. I also write as a creative service, collaborating on copy & content creation with brands or other creatives whose work I admire or believe to be important.

My current & upcoming collaborations include a project with established artist Michael Corris, to be distributed at the Venice Biennale. I’m looking forward to seeing it become something tangible soon. There’s also a catalogue that I’m so proud to have written for emerging artist Jer’Lisa Devezin’s MFA qualifying show at the Pollock Gallery.

Visually based collaborations, from sitting for photographs & writing a short blurb for jewelry designer Margaret Hulse of MPulse Studio, or sitting for a body painting by talented Dallas based artist Kristen Colaneri are examples of new methods of creative collaboration for me that I’d love to further through the year. Being able to place an emphasis on my relationship to how I make money is something that I know is a privilege, so I’m striving to make the most of it & have recently been putting the pieces together in order to use “Postmodern Indigenous”, which was originally conceived of as an online arts zine, to serve as a hub for other creative project launches.

Now in particular, I’m looking to blend my experience as a virtual stylist & a consultant in the wholesale apparel industry, as well as my education in & exposure to art & the art world, to introduce what I’m calling Aesthetic Consultation – styling as well as art & apparel buying/consultation services for both new & experienced clients. This would include things like trend reports for boutiques in need of consultation, look-books for virtual styling clients, & shopping with or for buyers in the market for original art.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had my share of challenges & I’ve definitely had to do some learning on the job, I’m still doing that, & there are never any guarantees, but I’m doing something I am choosing to do. Thinking about my work in that context makes the challenges I face now exciting ones.

Please tell us about Postmodern Indigenous.
I guess if I’m talking about my business what I’m really talking about is myself. I’m a writer with a myriad of varied creative experience. Looking back at the past year or so, I’ve worked in the apparel wholesale space as a part of shows like WWD Magic, I’ve contributed an essay as part of an amazing upcoming project that I hope I can share more about here, I’ve had the honor of being published in arts magazines that I enjoy reading, & I’ve worked as a virtual stylist.

My specialty, if I have one, is finding ways to merge my experience, interests, & education with the things I feel are important, & creating connections as well as something of value for a client or reader.

That may manifest as a curated vintage shop, a published piece, or even assistance on a film.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could do things differently, I would have been a teenaged millionaire…

I might have been bolder & more focused, but I can’t say when or where, & I believe I wouldn’t know what I know now or have the sort of determination, passion, or purpose that I currently do if things had been different at any point.
