Today we’d like to introduce you to LaNisha Nazon.
LaNisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been a lover of makeup. I used to sit at my mom’s feet and watch her put on her mascara and favorite red lipstick for the day before she left to go to work. But I didn’t have any plans on being a makeup artist. I was set on graduating from Virginia State University and becoming a big-time producer for a major network. I decided one day to try out for an organization on campus as the resident hairstylist but they asked me if I could be the makeup artist instead. I didn’t even know that makeup artistry was a thing but I did have tons of makeup and I was really good at doing my own so I gave it a try and immediately fell in love with it! Needless to say, I didn’t finish school but almost 11 years later I am still doing that thing I fell in love with initially; makeup artistry.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is so hard to figure out how to navigate in an overly saturated space and still remain a unique individual. There have been many days I wanted to give up and just work a 9-5 job, but my love and passion won’t let me do it. The most recent struggle was the move to Dallas; Fear is an entrepreneurs biggest enemy. I couldn’t imagine leaving everything I knew and everything I worked so hard to build to just start all over. And in this social media world, let’s face its frowned upon to not be a full-time entrepreneur. Which I knew I wouldn’t be able to do initially. But I had to be obedient to what God had told me to do. And since moving it has been the BEST decision I’ve ever made in my life (besides marrying my husband lol). It’s been a mere five months and so many blessings have been poured on to me just because I was obedient.
LaNisha Nazon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The name of my business is Soft Glamour Beauty. I am a DFW makeup artist, educator and beauty photographer. I specialize in bridal, special occasions and print work. I also provide beauty/editorial headshots for models and everyday consumers. Quarterly I have my makeup class offered to the everyday women entitled “It’s Just Makeup.” Where everyday women receive hands-on training on how to become her own artist. In that class, I simplify makeup to the individual! What I am best known for is my red carpet approach to makeup. I have a natural application touch. I believe that makeup should always be timeless. There are many photos I have taken in the past and I always ask myself “what was I thinking!” I don’t want my clients to experience that thought as they look back at their photos. What sets me apart is my customer service and customer care skills. You can find a makeup artist practically anywhere but what has continued to grow my clientele base is how I treat my clients. Makeup artistry is not a necessity but it is a luxury and I like to make sure that every individual I touch, teach or photograph receives nothing but prestige service.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment in my career was being the first African American in my city to own my own makeup artistry studio.
