Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Magdalen Falkenberg and Rachel Crews.
Mary Magdalen and Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are Mary and Rachel – two best friends that created a makeup business. Our makeup business started as a fun idea back in high school. This idea transformed into a dream, then a passion, then a real business. We met in college and had a mutual passion for making over our friends’ hair, makeup, outfits, and so on. We want to be able to give back to our clients by making them feel special, beautiful, and confident on the outside and inside. We realized that this could be a real business for us. So, we started with quite a bit of research into products and application techniques, practiced even more on our friends, created a business name, and made it happen!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is always difficult in the beginning. We had to be dedicated from the start because this was a large financial burden to collect supplies without the first paycheck. For both of us, this has been a second job. Therefore, staying committed to this passion has been monumentally important in our success story. For every step of the way, we have had to believe in our skills, market with confidence, and not give up when client intakes are slow. Our first paying clients were difficult and slow to acquire! Once we received them, the business started flowing more easily because our clients started recommending their friends, and our portfolio kept growing. Just don’t give up!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mary Magdalen Makeup – what should we know?
Mary Magdalen Makeup is a makeup and hair business for special events such as weddings, baby showers, photo shoots, graduations, date nights, etc. Our business name is inspired by Mary’s full (and long) name: Mary Magdalen Namasaku… (it keeps going!). We are truly passionate about what we do. Having the opportunity to know our clients, connect with them, encourage them, and make their visions for their special event become a reality is truly beautiful and keeps us motivated. We believe that every person is unique. Our clients have the opportunity to choose their color palates for their look. Our goal is to complement and enhance their individuality in the makeover with the added benefit of boosting confidence.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
Both of us instantly chose our mothers as women that have inspired our lives in many ways. Our mothers have an incredible work ethic and do it without complaining. Their love for us and support for our individual selves will be forever cherished. Mary’s mother moved from Africa to make a better life for herself and her child. She made this incredible and fulfilling life for them as a dedicated single mother who continues to climb up the business ladder in her company. Rachel’s mother had six children (5 girls!), is a handyman, seamstress, wife, chef, and is of incredible character. We both hope to be a great of mothers to our children one day as they have been to us.
