Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcie Dodd.
Marcie, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I can remember elementary school teachers telling me they knew I would be an artist when I grew up. Fast forward to my adulthood and now I can not picture my life without a creative outlet. My artwork is my life line, a source of comfort, where I work through difficult moments and big decisions, where I celebrate and where I mourn. I feel I have no choice but to let the flow happen and keep creating, even if I have stacks of finished canvases in my living room.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I prefer to work in a mixed media style. The layers required to create a cohesive mixed media piece are symbolic of the complexity of daily life. Things are rarely how they appear at first glance, whether in the real world or in my paintings. The more time you spend truly looking, the more you find to be intrigued by and to love. The details captured within a mixed media piece each tell a part of the story – they help guide your eye to what is the most important aspect of the painting and shield little secrets that the avid viewer will be able to pick out and glean more information about the subject matter. To me, it feels a little like a puzzle that I get to eagerly put together and wait for people to view and to solve on their own.
I use a variety of techniques to create each piece, some are experimental and others calculated and precise. Being a mixed media artist makes me an avid collector of interesting textures, trinkets, and trash that I can incorporate in a variety of ways. My artwork is a lesson on conservation, often using materials that other artists would discard. I would much rather find a beautiful way to use something than throw it in the garbage.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I have found that following hashtags on Instagram is a great way to get to meet artists in your community. Don’t be shy – send DMs, go to gallery openings, say hi!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I keep my Instagram profile updated the most consistently. You can find me there at www.Instagram.com/MixedMarcie.
